Converse or Superga?

AFewGoodWomen · 25/10/2015 22:11

I am 43 years old, not very trendy (the recent biker boot thread showed me that) and needing a pair of casual shoes to be dashing about in at the weekends.
I am veering towards Superga but then wondered about Converse.

Sorry, posted too soon.

What's the MN S+B position?

I find Superga way more comfortable (but that may not be what you're asking!)

AFewGoodWomen · 25/10/2015 22:14

Oh, Raia sadly, it probably is!
My days of suffering for fashion may be over!

Converse do look v uncomfy. Very rigid to get your foot into and the sole looks very unforgiving.

I'm 43 and wear Converse. I have white ones and navy ones. I also have some grey hi-tops. I've tried Superga but ended up giving them away/selling them. They were just too heavy and clompy for me. I'm a size 6 and find the Converse true to size.

Maladicta · 25/10/2015 22:19

See which fit you best - I can't wear Converse but love Superga. Schuh usually have both in.

AFewGoodWomen · 25/10/2015 22:27

Do Converse no low tops?

I have never tried Superga but I do find Converses comfy. You can always stick some insoles in for added cushioning for the sole although I have never felt the need.

Alternative casual shoes are brogues - look great with skinning or cuffed/turned-up jeans (also can be worn with smart clothes). The Clark's Hamble Oaks are very comfy and have a small heel so can be more flattering if you are not tall.

Raia · 25/10/2015 22:29

Agree, the only way is to try both on. Converse are narrower, lighter and less 'clumpy'. Superga have a chunkier sole and are slightly wider on the foot (ime). I find the chunkier sole more flattering: Converse make my feet look a mile long. Both brands do both high and low tops.

sky1010 · 26/10/2015 00:56

What will you be wearing them with?

If you have a bit of a punk (and I use that term loosely) style, I think classic black Converse low tops can look fantastic. They will look a bit awkward with a pair of blue bootleg jeans and a fleece but they look lovely with skinnies/tights and a skirt and biker jacket.

The off-White superga look great with denim or coloured chinos and are generally more versatile.

QueenofLouisiana · 26/10/2015 07:02

On the recommendation of someone lovely on here, I bought silver Supergas in July.

They've been worn loads and still look great. They are more comfy that Converse on my sore feet and have survived picnics, dog walks, city schleps..... I like the fact that these are leather do are drizzle proof!

I am now a huge fan, even though I'd never considered them before. I am aiming to buy another pair in the spring- probably navy.

Lndnmummy · 26/10/2015 18:09

I would love to wear converse but they are just too narrow for me so am a superga girl. I probably have most colours available and live in them on my non work days. Love them. ds and hubby have them too

Lndnmummy · 26/10/2015 18:10

Should add that we all have wide feet.

PennyPants · 26/10/2015 19:18

Converse for me. I much prefer the look of them.

Madbengalmum · 26/10/2015 19:22

Superga, i have both and think superga are cooler, and more comfy, everybody and his dog has converse.

wearymum73 · 26/10/2015 19:30

I have been wearing converse for 25 years, find them the most comfortable shoes ever, wear them when ever trailing a city for a day over anything.

AFewGoodWomen · 26/10/2015 19:34

Ok, very helpful. Going to try both on on Sat.
Next question: what do you call them? Trainers? Pumps? Plimsolls?

I don't want to sound like a showoff say "hang on, let me change into my Superga / Converse." (Or whatever. So do I say, "hang on, let me change into my trainers?" That does not sit right!

OP posts:
Madbengalmum · 26/10/2015 19:58

I dont think of a them as trainers

AFewGoodWomen · 26/10/2015 20:00

No, me neither.

Plimsolls, then?

mayum1 · 26/10/2015 20:55

I have been wearing my Converse a lot these days. I find them comfortable. I think I ordered the men's Converse though (I do have wide feet, but it was a mistake which turned out to be a blessing in disguise!)

Madbengalmum · 26/10/2015 21:30

Yup, i think plimsolls is closest, as i think of ballet type shoes for some reason when i hear the word pumps

polyhymnia · 26/10/2015 23:10

Yes, plimsolls (Superga fan here).

Sheezus · 27/10/2015 09:33

I bought supergas after a similar thread on here.
I wouldn't wear converse so bought the others.

Horrible clumpy clompy uncomfortable things.
I am still looking for a replacement.

mrslebon · 28/10/2015 10:21

Just to say, you can get silver Supergas with 25% off from The White Company at the moment using code AF146 (until 5th Nov).

MaisieDotes · 28/10/2015 10:26

I love my Supergas, I have a Liberty print pair that I wore all summer.

I do have Converse too but I never wear them. The particular pair I have at the moment hurt my heels. I have had comfortable pairs in the past though.
