How to find a good hairdresser?!

I'm wanting my hair cut short into a pixie cut, but how do I go about finding a hairdresser who is experienced with shorter hair? There are loads of hairdressers near me but they seem to advertise extensions etc, do I ring up and say have you got a stylist who enjoys doing really short styles?! I've had some shocking short do's in the past so really want to find someone with experience!

Where are you? How far will you travel for a hair cut? How much can you afford?

The infallible way is to ask everyone, even complete strangers, whose haircut you like where they had it cut. If you get more than a few mentioning the same place and stylist, it's worth phoning the salon to book a consultation/conversation. This should be free and will give you a chance to discuss how the stylist would approach cutting your hair. I have a short pixie and so do many other customers at the place I go (Exeter), but some stylists are better with curls, colour etc, so there are still questions to have asked and answered.

cressetmama do you mind me asking where you go in Exeter? I've tried Amanda Marsden and wasn't impressed with the person who cut my hair.

I agree that you need to ask people who you see with hair you like. I had the same hairdresser almost all of my life. Tried different ones and ended up with some shocking cuts. Eventually I had to bite the bullet and stop travelling 2 hrs to my hometown for a hair cut. I asked people at work with nice hair who they went to and went forward from that.

Space Hair and Beauty in Exeter are very good. I have been going there for several years and have always been pleased. I see Libby, and she likes curly hair, but I have never seen anyone leave looking dodgy!

If you are in London this may help.

I pay £60. For me, also an extra hairdresser, more money is better.
