Evening gown help

trinity0097 · 19/10/2015 18:41

I need an evening gown for a black tie event. Size 18 prefer not to have my arms on show. I did have the black version of this which I loved, and if I find nothing better I will buy this in an appropriate size www.kiyonna.com/plus-size-clothing/Dresses/13130902 but I don't really know where to start, I was proper plus size before so have never had to do 'normal' posh dress shopping. Budget up to £200.

I only wear flats and am 5'10.

Ooh, exciting! What's your shape and colouring? Are there colours you'd like or like to avoid?

this is fab.

LettuceLaughton · 19/10/2015 19:12

Do you actually want long BTW? I just assumed! It's not compulsory with black tie, only with white tie.

Narp · 19/10/2015 19:19

I have been to black tie events in the past, most recently a few weeks ago. No-one wore a long dress to this last one (I wore knee length). Unless you really want to, I would go for something that can do you for more than one occasion

I'll have a look

trinity0097 · 19/10/2015 19:21

I would prefer a long dress as I normally wear knee length for work. It's a whole Venetian mask black tie type thing, proper posh!

I have brown very short hair, and glasses!

Would also prefer something that is just about floor length as I can't wear flouncy shoes! No heels and I need some support!

Tell us about colours and neckline

I like that dress you linked - do you prefer a V- neck?

LettuceLaughton · 19/10/2015 19:25

This is very formal but I like it a lot. Prefer the first one I linked though.

trinity0097 · 19/10/2015 19:27

Would prefer something darker than really light, e.g. Claret, blues, purple, black. I don't think brown would suit me.

V neck works well, preferably though something that hides the bra straps otherwise I will have to see if I can get a strapless bra from bravissimo, a a size 34f

Not too keen on their length of the first one and the 2nd is a bit frumpy but the split up the back too revealing!

BendyBusBuggy · 19/10/2015 19:31

I really like this but it's over budget www.theoutnet.com/en-GB/product/Badgley-Mischka/Embellished-crepe-gown/639840

trinity0097 · 19/10/2015 19:32

I agree that 2nd one is nice, but toooooo expensive!

Phase Eight sequinned bodice

Narp · 19/10/2015 19:35

bugger - link fail - It's Sissy dress - Phase Eight

BendyBusBuggy · 19/10/2015 19:51

I like this (although it's only short sleeved) www.cocosa.co.uk/product.aspx?cid=10&saleID=sBUNBbrIOkuMFIGljFMPIg&productID=-t5QVdGKXEmFc7Kqh9kjww

PerspicaciaTick · 19/10/2015 19:52

Gorgeous velvet and it comes in claret too.

BendyBusBuggy · 19/10/2015 19:57

The velvet one is lovely!

This one is a bit different www.yoox.com/uk/34551889FN/item#dept=women&sts=sr_women80&cod10=34551889FN&sizeId=

trinity0097 · 19/10/2015 19:59

Seeing some nice ones, but am drawn to the original one more than any of them. I know it's comfy and forgiving! Wore it for the whole of last world book day (went as the deputy head from the worst witch!)!

Sorry I hate that one on yoox - very sack like and not formal enough

trinity0097 · 19/10/2015 20:05

What do you think of this one? www.phase-eight.com/fcp/product/phase-eight/occasion-dresses/soprano-tapework-full-length-dress/203097804
I know it doesn't have sleeves but I guess I could buy a flouncy shawl?

OP posts:
LettuceLaughton · 19/10/2015 21:24

mmm, this is very nice if sleeveless is now allowed. another colour
beaded
lace with sleeves This general sort of style is getting to look a bit dated though so it'll not be a dress you can wear for years.

This? (you could have the train taken off)
www.tkmaxx.com/view-all-womenswear/black-lace-tulle-gown/invt/53023276

Also I'm a 36g size 18. I have the deco strapless bra as recommended on here, its comfy and holds everything in place!

trinity0097 · 19/10/2015 21:29

I decided to buy the original one as nothing I was seeing came close - don't care if it is 'dated' a well fitting well made figure flattering dress will always look good. The original turned heads and I was 3 stone heavier then!

What about this? Very good price!
