Just got a job at my local council ( yippee) & wondering if anyone here works for their council & what they wear ?

It'll almost certainly be basic business wear - smart, no jeans, no high fashion. Fairly wide ranging I suppose.

scrivette · 19/10/2015 10:30

Everything seems to go at mine. The men tend to be smarter but the women range from looking smart to wearing jeans and trainers.

Missellie6 · 19/10/2015 10:31

People at my council wear everything from jeans and t-shirts to suits depending on what they do and if they ever meet the public. I dress relatively smartly as I do have a number of meetings but only wore a suit on my 1st day and felt very overdressed.

JennaRoss · 19/10/2015 10:32

Everything from business suits to dresses to smart jeans with jacket. No trainers though, unless they are in sports development etc

AnchorDownDeepBreath · 19/10/2015 10:36

Mine is smart. Men tend to be in suits, women in smart dresses and jackets, standard business dress. Interns wear smart-casual to make them easier to spot.

Judydreamsofhorses · 19/10/2015 10:47

When I worked at mine it was pretty mixed - managers suited and booted, but the majority of people below that level were smart/casual. I wore mainly dresses, occasionally black skinny jeans, but a lot of women wore black trousers and tops, things like v-neck jumpers. Congrats on your new job!

Oxfordblue · 19/10/2015 11:17

Thank you !

I'm used to be a SAHM in jeans/ jumpers etc so trying to work a middle line of where to aim.

Did work at a different council may moons ago (20 !) & it was very tame - men in white shirts + ties. Women just normal day clothes..skirts, blouses, no suits or jackets.

Totally depends on what role you are doing and who you will be mixing with. Can you tell us more? As a general rule black trousers and a smart top/ blouse or cardigan is a good starting point

cashewnutty · 19/10/2015 13:23

Depends what you are going to be doing. I work for the council as a social worker. I always wear smartish clothes (although i could wear jeans if i wanted to). Clerical staff wear jeans or casual clothes.

iwantgin · 19/10/2015 16:41

Depends on your job.

I have worked for the la for many years, most recently temping in different roles.

Most placed I have been has been casual dress code. Professional staff wearing smarter clothes/suits if in court etc. In general though pretty casual.

I like to wear jeans or casual trousers or skirts with nice tops or t shirts. Dress for comfort.

For My very first post I asked my line manager about dress code just so I didnt make a first day faux pas.

Congratulations on your job!

polyhymnia · 19/10/2015 16:58

As others have said, very much depends on the exact nature of your job, I'd think - level of seniority, department, etc.

Ferocia · 19/10/2015 17:42

Top level wear suits/smart dresses, mid-level wear slightly less smart dresses/black trousers, heels and smart tops, everyone else wears jeans. Depends on whether you will be customer-facing, have regular meetings with senior mgt or neither.

Oxfordblue · 19/10/2015 18:14

Will be a mix of client facing/ telephone, maybe some court work.

I don't recall anyone wearing jeans when i last worked for LA.

I did wear tailored shorts once, they was a collective gasp & was asked to never wear them again !
