Do you all wear belts?

I only ever wear tops that come below my waist, like to hip level. Never have anything tucked in. Looking at clothes online, lots of models seem to have tops (or a bit at the front at least) tucked in. I like the look, on them, just wondering could I pull it off. Also noticed that a lot of tops lately are shorter than I'm used to wearing.

I only own a couple of belts and they are skinny (I wear them with dresses) Should I invest in a wider brown leather belt to wear with jeans? I'm 41 and although not really overweight I'm short and therefore look a bit stumpy sometimes.

The tucked in look doesn't really suit me - I think I'm too short for it at 5ft2. There isn't enough distance between my boobs and hips for it to look good.

I only really wear belts for trousers/skirts that are a bit too big on the waist - for actually keeping them up/in place.

Greengardenpixie · 15/10/2015 13:16

Never wear a belt and oh god ive tried. They never stay put for me on a dress or top. They annoy me. Ive come to realise i just dont enjoy wearing a belt on a top or dress generally. On trousers, yes, to hold them up!!! That is a must!

Greengardenpixie · 15/10/2015 13:17

Its been years since i tucked anything in. I'm like you OP. Usually wear long tops. I dont like to emphasise my worst bits - tummy, hips and bum. All would be on show if i tucked in. I have had an aversion to this since i was a teenager.

macnab · 15/10/2015 13:59

This whole 'tucked in but only at the front' thing is really annoying. But like a previous poster, I am only 5'2" so maybe I'm just not the right shape for it either. I have an ok figure but I worry that I'll look like I'm trying to look like a teenager!

Maybe I'll spend my money on a new bag instead Smile

No I never wear belts.

They never look right and they're downright annoying. I have quite an hourglass shape so don't really need to pull things in at the middle.

73dexter · 15/10/2015 14:13

I wear a belt pretty much every day. I also do the tucked in at the front thing sometimes. I am quite a bit taller than you so maybe that helps!

AgathaF · 15/10/2015 14:24

I wear belts on jeans, it's the only way I can get them to stay up. I also do the tucked in and the front thing, but I'm tall too. It hadn't occurred to me that height might make a difference to that look. I don't tend to wear belts with dresses as they either ride up and annoy me, or if they're the type that go through belt loops then they are generally in the wrong place for me.

BlairWaldorfLovesShopping · 15/10/2015 14:31

It's not so much height as proportions. For instance, if you are short backed with longer legs then a waist belt might look silly on you because it will end up near the boobs. Conversely I have a long back, short legs and small waist, so I find that waist belts suit me because they make me look more in proportion (draw the eyes up which makes my legs look longer - I hope anyway!)
Maybe go into a shop and have an experiment with the jeans and a top tucked in?

CointreauVersial · 15/10/2015 17:35

I rarely wear them, because I have a straight up and down figure with not much of a waist (like stripytees there's hardly any gap between my lower ribs and pelvis), so it's not an area I like to highlight.

I do put a belt on jeans if they are too loose around the waist, and I do sometimes do the half-tuck. But that's about it.

blibblobblub · 15/10/2015 17:58

I don't tuck tops in really. I do wear belts with my jeans though because they're slightly too big and I've not got round to getting any more Blush

amarmai · 15/10/2015 18:16

skinny belts are in now and tucked in front and back. Try your skinnies on the longer tops and see how you like it before you buy more. I love obi belts and make them to match dresses when i sew.

Bodicea · 15/10/2015 18:18

I am short with disproportionally long legs and short waist. Boobs and a bit of a tum too. So belts really do look horrendous on me.
I do have issues holding jeans up due to lack of hips also but have got around that by taking to highwaisted jeans. These have been my saviours - but never tuck anything in. Would just highlight my lack of a waist. I can't stand all these belted dresses that have dominated the shops the last few seasons. Have avoided like the plague!

psychotropic · 15/10/2015 18:19

I don't feel dressed without a belt, even if nothing's tucked in.

mewkins · 15/10/2015 18:23

Belts have been a recent revelation to me on trousers, jeans and casual skirts. A tan belt goes with just about anything I reckon. I have started to tuck in a lot.

bigTillyMint · 15/10/2015 18:29

I have to wear them with trousers or I am forever hitching up, but I think that is because I have big thighs and a relatively small waist. I don't wear them with dresses, unless its a loosely tied belt that goes with the dress IYSWIM

hiccupgirl · 15/10/2015 19:12

I don't tuck tops in and I only wear belts under tops to hold my trousers up.

But as mentioned above, I'm short (5'3'ish) with a short back and long legs so tucked in tops makes me look very silly. I need longer tops to balance me out.

Doobigetta · 15/10/2015 19:37

I need one with jeans to stop them falling down. And I have a couple of work dresses that have belt loops so I have to wear a narrow one with them. But I appear to be very low waisted, because the belts hover about two inches above where they should, which is very annoying and uncomfortable.

Judydreamsofhorses · 15/10/2015 20:20

I always wear a belt with jeans - I have a small waist and big hips so have to buy bottoms to accommodate my bottom, which gape otherwise. I like shorter or tucked in tops, anything that ends hip length or thereabouts makes me look wide. I'm 5ft 6 and a 10 top, 12 bottom..

DamsonInDistress · 15/10/2015 20:22

I'm 5' 3" and rarely wear things tucked in to trousers or jeans, but I do occasionally tuck something into certain skirts, and I often wear belts with dresses or tunics. For me the key is in getting the rest of the proportions right - I have a high but small natural waist and big boobs, a classic hourglass really, and a relatively wide cinching belt on my natural waist with a deep scoop necked dress that ends just above the knee is a great look on me. The right height and shape of heel is important too, as is any necklace I might wear.

KateSpadeAddict · 15/10/2015 20:28

I wear a belt with my high waisted jeans and tuck things into them, I’m pretty short but I think it looks okay Smile I don’t do part in part out though - I couldn’t cope with that!
