I'm heading over to Australia shortly on a business trip. However I'm going to have a few hours here and there to nosey around the shops. Is there anything worth looking out for whislt there?

Bonds underwear.
And cherry r(o)ipes, but they're not S&B.
Pawpaw ointment?

Nonwittyusername · 12/10/2015 21:26

Will you be anywhere nEar Sydney? If yes, Paddington Market is an absolute must (it's nr centenary park). Has beautiful creations by independent jewellery and clothes designers.

Nanodust · 12/10/2015 21:27

Oh, thank you? I'd never heard of cherry ripes. I love cherry and I love coconut, so can munch whilst purchasing some bonds undies;). Will make a nice gift for the office too.

Not Sydney unfortunately, Melbourne, Adelaide and Cairns

Unless you're looking to spend $$$$, the quality of the clothes and shoes is pretty mediocre to be honest (I say this as quite a skint person living 2hrs from Sydney). However, if you want to spend, get yourself to a David Jones or Myer, which are the Aus equivalent of debenhams/JL, but a bit more upmarket, and you will find a lovely assortment of clothes, shoes, jewellery etc. Smile

curriegirl · 12/10/2015 21:29

Nothing. Clothing is shit for adults. If you have kids then some stuff for them. Summer stuff is in now so would be good for next year.

hettie · 12/10/2015 21:31

Bonds undies without doubt. You can get them here but they are pricey. That after arose comfy great quality cotton in lots of bright colours (and plain) and they last forever...

nilbyname · 12/10/2015 21:32

Tsubi jeans
Sass and bide jeans or casual wear
Dinosaur designs jewellery
Witchery is a bit like warehouse and has some nice bits
Mambo for beach wear/ surf stuff

On another note- wine! There is so much delicious wine!

TheSpottedZebra · 12/10/2015 21:32

Just go food. Maybe some Caramello Koalas too.
And macadamia nuts.

Nanodust · 12/10/2015 21:32

Ah, okay. Thank you for tips from Australia! I'm stopping in Singapore, kuala Lumpa and Dubai for two nights in each. Is there anything ther that is worth looking out for? I don't have a huge budget, but I've saved a few hundred pounds.

Dinosaur designs looks amazing, thank you

I agree it's not amazing but I liked the store Sportsgirl - bit like miss selfridge kind of thing.
There's a Westfield mall in Melbourne though that's massive. If you get bored in Adelaide go to the galleries instead they are incredible.
Cairns there's nothing to buy at all Smile
Melbourne has more quirky stuff - chapel street area is v v cool and trendy

nannyj · 12/10/2015 21:36

Chicken salt!!

Ifiwasabadger · 12/10/2015 21:41

Absolutely fuck all. Huge disappointment on the shopping front.

Nanodust · 12/10/2015 21:43

Any tips on things other than shopping to do, also greatly received. Henley beach looks lovely!

Melbourne- go to Wilsons Prometory, and squeaky beach. It's stunning. Melbourne is very very beautiful and the city is very cool with lots of coffee shops- you'll get an amazing flat white.

Cairns has some good thrift shops, worth a rummage but it's basically a very small town that people go to to access diving/scuba trips.

Singapore- foooood! Soft shell spicey crab!

Bumdance · 12/10/2015 21:54

As many pairs of bonds as possible. Target and big w are sometimes cheaper than from the bonds shop itself (which is in Melbourne central shopping centre) and have different colours.

Aesop do lovely stuff, some of which is good value, plus they do post-poo drops which make me giggle. If you get them to gift wrap stuff they do it beautifully.

Pawpaw ointment and a lovely mint lip balm which you can get in chemist warehouse, name temporarily escapes me but it's nothing flash.

Daiso is good for all sorts of novelty tat you didn't know you needed, I wouldn't make a special trip but if you pass it definitely go in!

Emporium in Melbourne is good for a wander (big, very fancy, new mall with big name shops), brunswick Street has zetta florence which is a gorgeous stationery shop, plus lots of other places to stick your head in, and about 5 million coffee shops.

Oooh, just remembered, you must go to gewurzhaus, original branch is lygon St but in the cbd too now. Not s&b but beautiful beautiful shop.

More generally in Melbourne, go for breakfast out all the time, go to vic market for sure, if it's your thing try and find some of Melbourne's laneway bars, they are hidden but fantastic. Walk along south Bank to see the crown flames on the hour in the evening.

Bumdance · 12/10/2015 21:55

Oh, and chandon sparkling shiraz, can get at the winery itself or Dan murphys stock it.

ICanSeeForMiles · 12/10/2015 21:56

Oh man I love chicken salt!! And Tim Tams. And myers bags and underwear. Ooh, jealous much Grin

Bumdance · 12/10/2015 21:56

One more and I'll stop. Mecca cosmetica although if you find any European brands you love just write them down and get them here, the price difference is huge, but I like mecca as a shop.

mayum1 · 12/10/2015 22:03

Timtams! Salted caramel, peanut butter, and now there's a new one - choco banana!

Bumdance · 12/10/2015 22:14

Yes to chicken salt and timtams, I'm partial to whittakers coconut too

Twinklestein · 12/10/2015 22:45

Pearls and opals. Drizabone. Leather hat (no corks).

WhereTheFuckIsMyFuckingCoat · 12/10/2015 23:33

Daiso! Forgot about that! Japanese tat shop where nothing is over $6 (everything used to be $2.80, so it was known as the two dollar eighty shop).

And I third (4th?) chicken salt, although I very quickly got sick of Tim tams.

Nanodust · 13/10/2015 06:21

Amazing, thank you. I'm going to have to try and skip a few meetings to fit this all in ;)
