Hello Crepeys. Half term here and t'Intnernet is reduced to a crawl as DS (and all his friends and acquaintances) gobble bandwidth. And it's getting dark and it has rained all day. Have lit the woodburner and am hoping DH comes home in a better mood than he left this morning.

New jobs are stressful; I hate to think what I'd be like!

Nice to hear from you, CressetGrinGrin.

I am not having the best week of my life. But am actually prepared for, and not fretting about, teaching tomorrow.

herbaceous · 27/10/2015 17:13

Wow, cresset. You really mean what you say!

I am incandescent with jobsworth-induced fury. The HR department (which is of course in the council, in a different building, with about 50 people in it of which I have had dealings with five already) sent me by email no fewer than eight 'new starter' forms to fill in. I filled them in and took them to my induction yesterday.

Naturally, I couldn't hand them to my new manager. They had to be handed to HR, at an appointment. They didn't have any appointments yesterday, so I made one for this afternoon, arranging the whole day around it and dragging DS with me, to present all my forms, and my passport and various forms of ID so they can do my DBS. Which they had told my line manager would be a formality.

I negotiate the over-the-top security to find yet another HR person telling me that I should have gone on to their website to sort out the DBS online. This fact is buried in page four of one of the aforementioned forms. So I have to make another appointment. He's not sure if I can start on Monday.

While I'm there, I think I might as well go and get my security pass. Without with I can't get into any of the offices or teaching rooms. Jobsworth in charge of that, without looking at me, says that he only does it until 3pm (it's now 3.45) then answers the phone and turns away from me.

I bloody hate this arsing job and I haven't even started yet.

See how full the thread is Grin

Lovely day with friends, dogs, pizza etc......

We are suffering dd1 re-entry... Visiting but hopping in and out trying to see everyone all at once....also it has put a blip into the 'new' family dynamic that was establishing itself between ds and dd2, so that's noisy! Lovely to have her here for a few days though.

Not sure I said well done to Stropps and Herbs.... Well done and good luck!

Rose, I hope you had a lovely day... I'll message re mini mu.

Auriga · 27/10/2015 17:20

That happens to me, too, Cresset, when our interweb is running slow Grin

Waved off last guests this morning, went straight to work and spent 5.5 hours on the Serious Incident Inquiry report. Took cake for fellow panel members but didn't have time for break to eat it. Submitted report & now have thoughts of going back to bed.

Left the guests to fend for selves yesterday and went to DD's concert. Two girls fainted onstage within minutes of each other at the start; upsetting for all of them. I knew it would make DD v. anxious & wasn't surprised to see her go & sit in a choir stall shortly afterwards. I feared a domino effect but the choir directors matter-of-factly continued, DD came back when she felt better and it all went well. The casualties were apparently fine, though one banged her head when she fell Sad. A triumph of choral discipline, though. Must congratulate the staff.

It only dawned on me today that DSis will no longer be having DM to stay, as her DD has moved back in at home to have baby. So DM's ours for Christmas, and indeed for all holidays, for the duration. I could insist that sibs come and care for her here to let us get away, as they can no longer have her in own homes. Won't work if we want to go & see them, though. Aargh.

hattymattie · 27/10/2015 17:54

Quiet day here but beautiful sunny weather so as the DD's were off with friends, I met up with a girlfriend for a coffee. We were able to sit outside but I fear those days are numbered.

Herbs - how very frustrating - is DBS a background check? I had to have a police background check but I sent it off online and it came back by post. I'm hoping to hand all paperwork to my manager on Monday morning though.

Hi Cresset Grin - I'm having to fight for possession of the laptop with DS as it's half term.

herbaceous · 27/10/2015 19:28

Yes, DBS is the Disclosure Barring Service, or something. It replaces CRB. It's ridiculously complicated. I got one for my placement college during my pgce, and apparently they don't 'expire', but different institutions have different requirements.

The college where I'm going to do TA work wanted me to apply online via their specific disclosure service, then bring in my documents for them to look at. The secondary nod primary schools where I'm volunteering just looked at my current one and said its fine. And this job has yet another rule.

You can somehow get online and update it yourself so it's portable, but only up to nine days after you get your original certificate.

OR SOME SUCH BORING AND OVERLY COMPLICATED BOLLOCKS.

Auriga · 27/10/2015 19:30

Herbs, I'm gnashing my teeth with you. Have you ever considered working in a prison (where your skils are much-needed)? This sounds like excellent training for it Grin

herbaceous · 27/10/2015 19:41

I have considered it, yes! But it's not term-time only, which was one of the points of retraining. I may considering when DS is older, and I'm more confident being surrounded by scary men.

NUFC69 · 27/10/2015 20:49

Pleased to hear that family parties/visits/conference calls etc all went well.

Herbs, I am convinced that the organisational abilities of the education system leave much to be desired. We have had problems with education ineptitude in my charity dealings.

BTM, I find I don't get jet lag going to the States, just when I get back. I hope DD is coping with all the activities and her homework.

DH and I are slumped in our chairs after taking two of the DGC to Beamish - we have done trams, steam trains and a carousel ride (the ride was accompanied by Wurlitzer organ type music: It's a Long Way to Tipperary). Tomorrow morning it's baking with DGS,

bigTillyMint · 27/10/2015 23:43

Herbs I am Angry for you - it's bad enough renewing my work one every few years.

Auriga, that's hard on you - feeling like you'll never get a break unless family come to you.

bigTillyMint · 27/10/2015 23:51

Just got back after 11 hours of sightseeing, shopping and eating. I found the 9/11 memorial/museum quite distressing, but thankfully DD didnt get cross with my tears or when i said i couldnt do the films of victims life-stories. After pizza in Grimaldis (narrowly avoiding a meltdown from DD who was hungry) we had a walk in Brooklyn Heights and then a shake/frozen custard (I had a shakenstein which was green with chocolate fudge cake in it) before going up the new One World Observatory to watch sundown. It was too cloudy for a decent sunset but it was fab watching the place light up as it got darker.

Lalsy · 28/10/2015 00:07

Tilly, this sounds such a fab holiday.

Gosh, Auriga, that's tough. Maybe getting something in place now for breaks would be a good idea - hot irons and all?

Herbs, much sympathy. I don't understand how institutions can vary so much - surely good practice should be established? dd had to have an enhanced disclosure check for a summer job and did it all online/docs by post. She had two basic checks within months of each other, which used completely different procedures. I'd be seeing red at the unhelpful attitude too.

hattymattie · 28/10/2015 08:12

BTM - your break sounds amazing.

Auriga · 28/10/2015 08:35

Yes, Lalsy, I spoke to the manager of a local home care company recently. Think I should get her to come & meet Mum & organise some regular visits, while she doesn't need them, to get her used to the idea.

bigTillyMint · 28/10/2015 08:50

Yes I think that would be a good idea Auriga. My DM found it hard to get used the "the girls" coming round at first, but it seems to be going OK now - we just do 2x 2 hour a week, but I can up it as and when it seems necessary. I am trying to get her to consider going to a lunch club once a week but she is still resistant!

motherinferior · 28/10/2015 09:24

BTM, your holiday is what I believe young people today term goals.

Off to teach. Woke up in the night with a new idea for how to run today's sessions!
