Hydrating primer? Or possibly foundation

I generally have pretty good skin and quite often stick to BB cream or tinted moisturiser but at the moment, due to stress and ill health, I've had a few break outs and some redness I would like to cover. My skin leans towards oily but also gets dehydrated very easily. I'm finding that when wearing foundation for a bit more coverage it's drying me out and by lunch time I look like one of those talking rock heads from Labrynth. My lines all show up, whereas when I keep my skin hydrated they are not noticeable, and I generally look a bit cakey.

I do a full CH type routine morning and evening and this problem only seems to appear when I use foundation! I use a primer underneath and apply with a brush. Today I used the new Max Factor foundation, but I've tried a few different ones recently and keep having this problem. It doesn't exactly go patchy (which is what used to happen before I took proper care of my skin - it would just suck the water out of my make up). I just look craggy, not unlike Clint Eastwood, in fact.

Does this happen to anyone else and any suggestions? I do sometimes spritz during the day which helps a bit.
