The assistant today said they smudge when they are old! I had never considered that, she thinks when they dry out, and tbh I put an old one on today and it HAD smudged

I may be cynical but maybe a ploy to get you to buy a new one? A drop or 2 of eye makeup remover into the mascara will help Smile

was buying anyway - was swapping one ( see other thread)

Ah ok! What one did you go for?

I had a brand new Guerlain Cils d'Enfer mascara sample straight from the SA and it smudged like crazy. Poor formula I'd say.

swapped a YSL shocking ( was shockingly shit) to a Dior Extase

I have had brand new mascaras smudge on me. Many times.

I am assuming it's the mascara (normal and waterproof are equally bad) that gets broken down by either the oils in my skin or the oils in the products I use - some products make it worse.

My solution is using a tubing mascara. It is polymers that coat the lashes instead of the classic wax based mascaras. It comes off really easily with warm water.

With regards to old mascaras, I would suggest replacing them every 3-6 months because of the bacteria growth in them.
