Tights - coloured or black opaques? Please advise...

On the one hand... I'm very pleased that the time has some for tights again as I find winter dressing easier than summer dressing, and love opaques.

On the other hand, this year it's occurred to me that black opaques don't go with everything.

Should I be wearing coloured tights? For example, yesterday I was wearing a dark blue dress with black opaques... should I be wearing coloured tights? And it that's the case, what colours work with (say) dark blue, red, green dresses/skirts...?

I'm sure someone has the answers...

(Hopeful?)

Grey would work with a dark blue dress. I saw someone with bright yellow tights on yesterday - they'd work if you were brave.

RedRosie · 26/09/2015 11:30

Thanks Swedish. I might try grey - presumably that would also go with many other colours?

Then of course, it might influence how shoes look... Such a minefield!

Not brave, although maybe bright tights could be a tiny act of uncharacteristic bravery? Smile

Burgundy or teal or navy are good alternatives to black in addition to grey. Also varying shades of grey to try........not sure there are 50 though Grin

If I wear a navy dress I wear navy tights as I usually wear brown boots. I'm always unsure about navy, grey and brown together but if you have grey boots I think It's fine.

JaceLancs · 26/09/2015 16:09

I would wear navy tights with a navy dress
I have opaques in lots of different colours but black navy or grey are the ones I wear most

SwedishEdith · 26/09/2015 16:38

Yes, I wouldn't choose to do navy, grey and brown together but probably do as stylistically disorganised

For red, brown and green dresses I'd use black or brown tights. Navy dress and navy tights feels a bit school uniform (but so do grey tights Confused). Maybe it's easier to keep navy for summer or for top half only?

Love, love, love winter dressing though.

Fruityb · 26/09/2015 16:45

I generally wear black opaques. I'm so happy to have thick tights and boots on. I'm very much a winter dresser as well. Autumn makes me so happy :)

I have grey wooly tights as well as burgundy and dark blue, which are covered in little coloured flecks. I wear coloured with black but otherwise I'm on the black ones with everything else.

Scarves and boots and jeans and layers and tights! It's fab :)

sadsister4 · 26/09/2015 16:47

Well, according to the Times this week, opaques are out. They're just wrong. It's bare legs all the way this autumn and winter!

Hmm

Yeah, right.

RedRosie · 26/09/2015 16:49

Sorry Cactus Smile But I do prefer autumn/winter dressing. I expect that you are younger and with lovely limbs.

Thank you all - very helpful. I'm going to get a variety of colours and give it a go.

Where can I get wooly tights that don't go all Norah Batty round me knees and ankles?

Fruityb · 26/09/2015 18:27

I get them from tesco and never had any wrinkle issues :) would always wear them with boots though, they look weird with my usual ballet pumps lol

RedRosie · 26/09/2015 18:47

I've been avoiding the subject of boots. I have some long ones, but need ankle boots don't I? There are six million threads about them already. Smile

Again, thanks all. I'm going to buy grey, navy and (maybe) teal opaques and go from there.

and boots

I have clumpy knee length brown and black and some calf length brown clumpy ones from Manataray which I adore. I like tucking my jeans in them or wearing them with dresses. I may look like a golf club but honestly don't care, my feet are so toasty in them lol

RedRosie · 26/09/2015 19:16

Fruityb - you're talking about BOOTS aren't you?

We've all gone boots bonkers. Grin

Does this happen every year? I think I must have blocked it out as I find buying boots so traumatic that I prevaricate and procrastinate and fanny about for months every Autumn until it is Spring again. And then begins another year without ankle boots.

(I expect I shall look at them when buying tights)

Balls to summer dressing, especially when you work somewhere that has the air conditioning set to 17 degrees year round. Also, Autumn/Winter dressing is just easier.

I would wear navy, teal, dark brown or even dark plum tights with a navy dress. I have navy shoe boot things and navy knee high boots. Brown boots also work with navy.

I like navy. I also like boots. Grin

RedRosie · 26/09/2015 20:19

Yaaay Kitty.

Oh God ... What's a shoe boot? Do I have to buy them as well?

OP posts:
Fruityb · 26/09/2015 20:22

Sorry. I just love boots. :)

KanyesVest · 26/09/2015 20:29

Where do you all buy these lovely plum, teal, navy and gray tights?

SwedishEdith · 26/09/2015 20:43

John Lewis do coloured ones.

KittyB52 · 26/09/2015 20:46

I think shoe boots are just ankle boots that don't come up as high around the ankle? clueless

I got some nice teal opaques from New Look online in their sale - just had a look and they only seem to have mustard in stock now. Debenhams also do some brown opaques (again, got mine in the sale). Dorothy Perkins have 80 denier in navy, green, brown and red at the moment, and there's 30% off. Which is handy if you are, like me, short in t' leg.

What? At least I amuse myself. Grin

Fruityb · 26/09/2015 20:49

I get mine from sainsbury or tesco. Always have loads in. Or superdrug, seem to recall buying berry coloured ones there.

amarmai · 27/09/2015 00:21

khaki goes with a lot of fall and winter outfits.

RedRosie · 27/09/2015 17:18

Right. I've bought some plum, grey, navy, brown and (very brave) mustard coloured tights from John Lewis and M&S.

New life starts tomorrow! I'm still feeling a bit wibbly over what colour to wear with my bright red knitted dress, so any ideas for that welcome.

Many thanks all, for the advice.

yetanotherchangename · 27/09/2015 17:22

I get mine from M&S. They come in three packs of co-ordinating colours and a good range of sizes.

RedRosie I might be tempted to go wild and wear the mustard ones with the red dress (but failing that I think navy would look very cute)
