Styling a skirt with flat shoes

I generally live in trousers, but I'd really like a couple of skirts for work and general daytime wear. However, I can't do heels all day, so fancy a pair of loafers that I can wear with opaque/woollen tights.

I've seen some lovely tweed skirts in Hobbs, but they all look rather short and, as I'm 61, not sure if I can get away with it? I am 5'7" and a size 12, but don't want to look like mutton. Anyone any advice? Can I style a knee length pencil skirt with flats, or will that not work?

I've tried, but not succeeded as far as loafers go, but it might be my legs... looks better on others than on me.

knee high boots (can be flat), or wedgey flats/ankle boots seem to be a lot easier to get right & still comfy

On another note - I cannot imagine that a hobbs tweed skirt would be an inappropriate look, their stuff is v classic so sure you would look lovely!

Thanks pdxs the Hobbs skirts I've seen are this one and this . Trouble is, I've lived through this look at least once in my lifetime and I'm still visualising myself as I did first time round!

on the model the skirt looks to be just above the knee and you are modelish height , so if it's just above the knee and you are wearing thickish tights , you will look fine -either with flats or ankle boots. Nice skirts !

Loafers look frumpy with skirts. Sorry. It looks too early 1990s (and it didn't look good then).

Go with pdx's footwear suggestions.

I know flat boots would look fine, I just thought loafers might be more useful as I could wear them with jeans too. Think I'll just have to try some on and see; thanks for the input.

It all depends upon the length. The skirt needs to be above the knee or at the knee for loafers to work on me with a skirt. Boots are no problem though.

I'm almost your age, op and I have a very similar Hobbs skirt that finishes immediately above the knee and I wear it every winter with thick tights and either loafers, brogues or flat ankle boots. I'm pretty self critical and I think it looks fine.

I think a pencil shape can be trickier to wear with flats but I have several tube skirts that I wear with the ankle boots in winter and plimsols in the summer.

I wear loafers and brogues with skirts. Doesn't look frumpy on me.

Pointed flats work well and knee high boots as others have suggested.

OK, I'm definitely going to get a skirt, then try all the suggestions and see what suits. Quite excited about it now (how sad).

hey, op,you're enjoying this in real life- we're enjoying by proxy on mn!we're not sad.

Petal02 · 27/09/2015 09:46

Another vote for pointed flats, they look quite 'dressy'.

JaceLancs · 27/09/2015 11:28

Pointed flats would be my choice too, as I have tiny feet - very few brogues look stylish on me
Pointed footwear always looks bit more dressy too so ideal for work
