How do i Steampunk up a Wedding dress for Halloween

its a Trudy Lee 47015
(like this one i.ebayimg.com/00/s/ODIwWDcyMA==/z/-asAAOSwpDdVc-Ep/$_86.JPG - this is not my picture)

just in case you're not sure what steampunk is

Steampunk refers to a subgenre of science fiction and sometimes fantasy that incorporates technology and aesthetic designs inspired by 19th-century industrial steam-powered machinery.

a black lace up leather corset on top of the dress. Dye the dress a dark color- maybe burgundy. Cut the dress knee length and wear lace up victorian heeled knee high boots. Add some Victorian jewelry and a pocket watch .

SteampunkPrincess · 16/09/2015 18:53

oh - some good ideas, thanks

not sure about dying it - just think of the mess!!! I wonder if i could 'draw' or print clockwork patterns on it?

but maybe the corset would work

you can dye it in the washing machine! Only have to do another wash after wards with bleach. A corset is a must!

There's an episode of Randy from "Say yes to the dress" adding steampunk elements to a wedding iirc he created a great bouquet which included cutlery, antique spectacles and watch parts? Think the bride also wore a birdcage type veil that he had "doctored"? The episode may be on you tube??

acsec · 16/09/2015 19:00

Have a look here corsets

Investmentspaidout · 16/09/2015 19:03

I would add a black bustle to the back and also black stiff netting round the shoulders.

I would go knee length at front but long at the back, have a pomander/ fob watch or both attached to the corset.

Small black top hat with veil

amarmai · 16/09/2015 19:43

yy the bustle- you can make it from the giant hunk you cut off the hem. Love the accessories, invest! Are you SP?

JacobFryesTopHatLackey · 16/09/2015 19:51

I would definitely add a corset or a bustle.

What do you think of something like this outfit that was made with a wedding dress?

wow guys - thats amazing - thanks

I have thought i could maybe get some large cogs, and then spray around them to make a stencil type pattern

Investmentspaidout · 16/09/2015 23:32

Amarmai not SP but I have made quite a few costumes over the years and am from a long line of milliners.

Cogs may be hard to find cheaply, I would cut lino to make a stencil, you may be able to get a free piece from freecycle.

SteampunkPrincess · 17/09/2015 07:14

I was thinking about stencils and maybe hobby craft balsa ones?

This is an iphone case (a very pricey one) but I think this sort of pattern would look beautiful near the hem of your dress. Maybe interspersed with some lace stencils.

What about something like these? As stencils.

ChristineDePisan · 17/09/2015 11:26

Spray painting can look great but also rubbish if not done well, especially intricate patterns

I'd lop loads off the front (to show off a pair of lace up boots) and create a huge bustle with it (you could easily dye this bit of material in the washing machine). Big wide leather belt with buckles. Lace gloves. Veil, possibly on a hat. Neck collar

Investmentspaidout · 18/09/2015 01:53

A parasol would look great as an acessory, I made a fake one out of a garden bamboo cane, ribbon and lace tablecloth as it didn't need to be opened.

trollkonor · 18/09/2015 09:56

I'm not too keen on drawing patterns on it as it could easily look tacky. If you go for a corset over the top could you sew a short lace skirt into it? Red, purple or burgandy. Een a very wide belt with lace coming down.

I love the bouquet idea, or parasol.

Long gloves and a top hat of sorts.
Chocker around the neck.
Amazon has quite a few cheap steam punk pocket watches, my son wanted one for his birthday this year.
If you type steam punk goggles into Amazon there are some reasonable priced ones too, they could be worn up on a hat.

It doesnt have to look perfect close up, its actually for..... bonfire processions.... I'm in one of these societies, so i will be walking along with a flaming torch!
