Customised ring- anyone know about jewellery to give advise?

I've admired the ring set in this picture for a long time. It's way too pricey for me, coming in at over 2k for the set.
However I'm visiting Dubai soon and a reputable jeweller has confirmed then can make the set for circa £900.

The specifics they will make it to are:

Ring 1 as picture im 18k Rose Gold
Center stone - 0.80 carat approx. - Round shape - Morganite
Side diamond - 0.40 carat total approx - Round Brilliant - VS-SI - F-G

Eternity ring as picture in 18k Rose gold Diamond - 0.30 carat total
approx - Round Brilliant - VS-SI - F-G

I have no idea whether that's a good price or good specifics, I know nothing about gems! However I'm tempted as I've just sold some things on EBay and thought it might be nice to use the money towards it, but also never spent so much before on anything for myself so feel a bit guilty and also don't want to be paying too much.

Anyone know whether this a fair price for the rings? Thank you :)

I know nothing about rings either, but I guess if you get it in the UK for 2K and elswhere for 900£ it's a bargain. No?

Nanodust · 15/09/2015 21:44

Quite often there's a big mark up on the 'label' so the UK price us probably quite inflated as it's a designer name. I understand it can sometimes be a 60% mark up.

Try giving these a ring and asking them how much it would be in rose gold. They were very helpful when I bought my wedding ring.

Thank you for the link. Does anyone know regarding the description. Whether that is a good price for the rings from Dubai?

There's usually a 100% or more mark up on jewellery Wink

TripTrapTripTrapOverTheBridge · 16/09/2015 08:56

Depends what you mean by good price. It's cheaper so it's a good price. It includes labour though and always will. I;m not sure what you're asking/expecting really?

TripTrapTripTrapOverTheBridge · 16/09/2015 09:14

Different grade of diamonds in that one and I wouldn't trust a site that describes a morganite ring as an emerald ring.

With jewellery 'good price' can mean anything. It's worth what people will pay

superbfairywren · 16/09/2015 15:14

I would be wary but it could be a bargain. I would meet the jeweller and see their premises/workshop and not hand over any money until you're certain it's not a scam. How do you know the jeweller is reputable? Have they been recommended?

Also just check hallmarking/diamond grading is the same in Dubai, I have no idea I'm afraid but if they aren't the same the spec won't mean anything.

Good luck! Its a lovely ring, but I do feel like I've seen it lots of times before.

I'm in the middle east and have had a number of things made / repaired and re-fashioned in Dubai. Costs are lower primarily because labour is cheap and there isn't a monopoly on stones like in the UK.
Every single thing I have had from DXB has had a high value put on it back in blighty. Everywhere I have used has provided certification . I haven't heard any horror stories but some places are cheaper than others. If you post the jewellers name I will check it out .
Like previous posters have said , I would prefer to go and see the ring/stones before you commit.

TripTrapTripTrapOverTheBridge · 16/09/2015 16:27

Superb the majority of mass produced jewellery sold in the uk is made abroad, whether India or China. The Labour is cheap and the materials are cheaper. In the UK, however, we place a higher value and a higher price on such things.

To give you a rough idea, I pay 50% of retail price for all stones (many also cheapened buying in bulk) including diamonds. My stone suppliers,in the UK, also make a profit on the stones they sell to me,obviously, and they also pay the people they get them from. Now work out the mark up on such things given that info...

superbfairywren · 17/09/2015 16:32

I understand mass produced jewellery is made abroad and sold here but with materials they are sourced and then regraded, hallmarked here so when sold in the UK they meet our norms. I'm not sure how it works for something entirely produced in another country not entering the UK market. I'm sure it's pretty similar worldwide and from other posts it sounds like it would be a good idea to have it made in Dubai. I would always be wary of anyone promising anything at what you think is a really cheap price so just be careful.
