40 & found out, or, why do I like this?

I think some marketeers have logged that I'm turning 40 sharpish. A Land's End catalogue arrived, never looked at it online or in person - so just a guess, no idea if it is aimed at an age group or what, could be coincidence.

I had a look through and two things that I would never normally like - but tbh in styles I'd never normally see - appealed to me and I don't know why. There is something a bit old-fashioned about them or do I mean classic?

I can't afford them and the jacket in particular is not money I'd ever spend, it's way too much - but I was curious to know what others thought of them. Also, I'm quite baby faced so I think they would look more odd on me IYSWIM. It can be amusing being baby faced and getting ID'd etc but it probably does impact on how I dress....though I don't think style is necessarily age related anyway? Confused.

just curious to know what people think of them. I suspect the coat, I will change my mind in about 5 minutes, but I did really like the jacket, if I found a cheaper version I might buy it for work.

I can see the quilted coat appealing, as the quilting isn't in the 'traditional' square design. It would also appeal to me for the same reason.

PS - I should probably add - re the coat - I feel the cold hugely, so anything that promises lightweight warmth gets a thumbs up from me. To date, I haven't found anything really warm that doesn't look bulky, but then again, when it gets below, my friends and family laugh at me because I go everywhere looking like I'm in Siberia.

If I could find a trim fit, genuinely warm non bulky coat - that didn't cost like £150 - I'd be pleased but as it is I just muddle along looking like I weigh about 2 stone more than I do!!

I think the coat is very cleverly designed, it's got little details like the slanted pockets that will make you look neat and not bulky

The pattern is very nice and a loooong way from that Chavvy puffa look which geezers wore in the late 90's and is trying to be reclaimed by the Barbour lot (unsuccessfully) since

I think the coat is absolutely hideous, sorry. The jacket might look okay for work.

interesting views on the jacket - I thought perhaps it would be seen as something worn by ....see I don't even know what I mean. Someone a bit kind of conservative?

I think it would be nice with jeans but probably too conservative for me with anything else. I'll keep an eye out and see if anyone does it at a more affordable price.

Step away from the catelogue. You can do better than these two items. It's the colour that's appealing.

I think I might have some weird idea that I ought to start thinking about how I dress. I'm sure I'll be over it by next week

You don't have to change your style when you turn 40. I am 47, and probably dress younger now than I did 10 years ago, when I used to wear a lot of Boden and the like.

Those clothes may look lovely on the 20yo model, but once on the body of a slightly larger, 20 year older person, are often just frumparama!

I know £150 might seem a lot for a coat, and if you don't have it, you don't have it, so fair enough. But remember, you may wear a coat day in day out from October to April. Even if you only use the coat for 2 years, that's coming in at about 35p a wear. And, a coat is often the only item of clothing people see you in. So, a lovely coat is really worth while having.

The coat is exactly what my mum wears with bootcut jeans and these kinda boots. Oh and a scarf tucked in to the neck.

NotToday - the coat or the jacket? one of my friends is 57 and wears boots like that all the time but she'd hate the coat and she'd say her mother (80+) would wear it.

Sanity - I don't actually have a style. I think the catalogue caught my eye because I laughed at first - thinking it must be "new mailing list" time as I enter a new decade, you know what these companies are like - and then I thought "are a couple of these too old for me" but I feel bad for even thinking it.

I suppose I have it in my head that certain styles are older but I have no idea why.

I know what you mean. I have just turned 44 and I am struggling to find a look. To old for Top shop type skimpy clothes and to young for the frumpy warm things. I quite like both those items but yes it could be the colour.

I am thinking of making an appt with the personal shopper in Debenhams where there will be a range of prices and a range of clothes.

At the minute I quite like Esprit especially the EDC stuff.

You probably wouldn't wear anything now that you would have worn ten years ago anyway. Seasons and ideas change all the time.

For the cold get some Vit D supplement (800iu) and take two for a month and then daily. Most people in this country are deficient and it makes you really unable to tolerate the cold.

I take more Vit D than that. Doesn't make a blind bit of difference but I promised my doc I would keep taking it as I have really bad SAD. It's also sold for a £1 at my local pharmacy so I figure, fair enough.

I really just started this thread out of curiosity because I am not normally taken with any particular style or item. It's been interesting to hear feedback, thanks
