jeans marking/staining crossbody bags

Slightly clueless S&B question! I have several nice lighter-coloured crossbody bags that have ended up with indelible blue smudges on the back from dark denim jeans, even ones that have been washed a few times (the jeans, not the bags). At the moment my solution is to only use my black bag if I'm wearing dark jeans without a long coat to protect the bag, but I have a really nice tan leather bag that basically never gets seen for large chunks of the year and I'd like to use it more. Does anyone know of any magic protector that repels denim stains? Or should I start a fad of wearing a large muslin cloth tucked apron-style into my belt as a bag protector?

I have often seen Collonil recommended on here. Never tried it myself though.

Oh, interesting, I thought that was just a waterproofer - I've used it on my black leather bag and leather shoes for waterproofing and it's v good for that. Didn't know it repelled stains as well. I'll get some more and try it on the tan one...
