Can you help me? Teen dd has hair like Neil from The Young Ones.

I have no idea how to style it, products to use? I don't think its a cut issue as she goes to a hairdresser and she looks fine when comes out of the hairdresser. But I'm clueless what to do with it.

So it's long and straight. She washes it and blow drys it. She brushes it with a paddle brush when she gets up. Neil may be a slight exaggeration but it just looks unstyled....which it is I guess!

Other girls at school have long straight hair but somehow look more groomed.

What does she need? Mousse? Hairspray? Sea salt texture sprat? GHds?

She uses Tresemme shampoo which has helped with the frizz.

She's getting nasty comments at school. Someone said to her yesterday "I spent an hour doing my hair this morning, how long did you spend" in a sneery manner. Do teen girls really spend an hour doing their hair?

She would love hair more like this. I have watched some of Zoellas YouTube videos but it seems to be more about complicated styles and Primark hauls and I lost the will to live. But she did say something about seasalt spray in one video.

This is dd, the shorter one on the left.

Her hair looms thick, with a slight wave and a tendency to frizz - would that be right?

TheSpottedZebra · 07/09/2015 12:43

Looks! Not looms.

NeitherHereOrThere · 07/09/2015 12:49

Try changing her parting to a side one.

Does she use conditioner - this may help with the tendency to frizz.

wickedwaterwitch · 07/09/2015 12:52

I reckon straighteners and some anti frizz / glosser type stuff will sort it

Although it looks fine to me!

DeathMetalMum · 07/09/2015 12:54

I agree with the side parting. I've recently changed mine and it looks much more like I've 'done' something to it when just rough blow drying it than it does in a centre part.

Maybe some little things with bobby pins/hair grips. My friend always manages to look like her hair has had time spent on it in the morning when it's two minutes and a couple of hair pins usually twisting some hair back or something. I can't seem to get iit to look as good in my hair, but I've very fine hair and hers isuch thicker.

SonceyD0g · 07/09/2015 12:55

My daughter had hair like this. We actually used to jokingly call her hair Neil!
Switch to a side parting and have it shaped around her face? Straighteners?
My dd had hers cut last year hairdresser took a foot off it it's still halfway down her back but looks even thicker now. We now refer to it as her mane!

Floisme · 07/09/2015 12:56

Her hair sounds like mine. The best thing I ever did was let go of my fantasy of having long, perfectly straight hair and have it cut into a style that actually suited me. But I was 18 before I was ready to do that. I'm sorry she's having a hard time.

WhoTheFuckIsSimon · 07/09/2015 13:01

Thanks everyone.

Yes, long, thick, slight wave and tendency to frizz. She uses Tresemme shampoo and that's been a lot better.

We have tried a side parting before but it just seems to revert back to a middle one. I will try again and maybe try some spray to see if it stays in a side parting better.

Sorry, uses Tresemme shampoo and conditioner.

Will blow drying it in a side parting help it to stay in a side parting? She just drys it without styling it at the same time.

The best thing to do is go to the hairdresser and ask them to cut/style it like Zoella and have them show her step by step what to do. Also check out some youtube tutorials for the same look. Other people would have done a tutorial on the same look apart from Zoella herself.

WhoTheFuckIsSimon · 07/09/2015 13:07

I know, but it's getting her down a bit and affecting her confidence no matter what I say. Sad

I think a hairdresser showing/telling her what to do step by step is a good idea. They don't mind doing that do they?

OP posts:
RachelZoe · 07/09/2015 13:09

No, as long as she is having a cut and style at the same time they won't care, they'll probably need to cut it a little anyway. Ask them if they wouldn't mind as her hair is really bothering her. I'm sure it wont be an issue.

TeresaGiudicesForehead · 07/09/2015 13:10

Yes it will, If she blow dries it in a side parting. Keep the hairdryer close to the root on a fast, cool setting so you don't fry the hair. (like I did)

Corygal · 07/09/2015 13:13

She's gorgeous and a lot of people would die for that rich, thick dark hair.

hellsbellsmelons · 07/09/2015 13:14

Try some cheaper hair straighteners.
these are reasonable
You'll find GHDs just aren't as good as they used to be and other producers have improved beyond GHDs.
Remington are usually good.
these are half price
fantastic price for Remington

ppeatfruit · 07/09/2015 13:14

I feel for her and you , she looks fine to me, tbh if she looked like JenAniston someone unpleasant will say something, it's just what some girls do.

I found that final rinsing in softened water ( it acts as a hair conditioner) then a tiny bit of Argan oil for the wispy bits. Makes my hair look lovely. Changing partings is also a good idea, does she fancy an informal fringe?

WhoTheFuckIsSimon · 07/09/2015 13:16

She tried a fringe. She's desperate for one. It looked awful due to a cowlick. She's growing it back out now.

I'd say side-parting if you can be bothered (you kind of have to 'train' the hair to grow in the right direction). Conditioner on mid-lengths/ends only. Only wash every other day (if that). Hairdresser might put some layers around her face and even take some weight out of her hair without losing length which might make it seem more swingy.
Virtually all 'styles' you see on TV put lots of volume in the roots. You can do that lots of ways - hot rollers, back-combing even. Easiest is to maybe put some kind of product in (simple mousse would be fine) then just dry your hair upside down to lift the roots away from her head.
Zoella also has colour in her hair which makes it seem more interesting!
Also remind her that she's lovely looking no matter what (she is!) and that someone who spends an hour a day doing her hair can't have a lot else going on in her brain.

ppeatfruit · 07/09/2015 13:20

Yes to drying upside down. Does she hate hairdressers? dsis had a bad experience in one 50 years ago Grin and has never been since Grin She cuts her own. She was trained though!
