Can you help me? Teen dd has hair like Neil from The Young Ones.

I have no idea how to style it, products to use? I don't think its a cut issue as she goes to a hairdresser and she looks fine when comes out of the hairdresser. But I'm clueless what to do with it.

So it's long and straight. She washes it and blow drys it. She brushes it with a paddle brush when she gets up. Neil may be a slight exaggeration but it just looks unstyled....which it is I guess!

Other girls at school have long straight hair but somehow look more groomed.

What does she need? Mousse? Hairspray? Sea salt texture sprat? GHds?

She uses Tresemme shampoo which has helped with the frizz.

She's getting nasty comments at school. Someone said to her yesterday "I spent an hour doing my hair this morning, how long did you spend" in a sneery manner. Do teen girls really spend an hour doing their hair?

I agree about changing the parting, that will make the biggest difference. I have very straight hair and I too can look quite Neil-ish when my hair has a centre parting. Maybe lobbing a few inches off the end would help. I know girls these days like uber long hair but it doesn't suit everyone.

She's a lovely looking girl!

I have similar hair although I had it cut to chin-length a while ago. Wavy and very frizz-prone. The only things I've found to help are Schwarzkopf Got2b Guardian Angel heat defence spray before blow drying and straightening, John Frieda Frizz-Ease conditioner that comes in a tub, you leave it on for five minutes and it works a treat, and the extra strong Frizz-Ease 6 effects serum, it's like a purple serum that works amazingly on my frizz. No other products have worked for me, so I can't recommend it enough!

Definitely straighteners - don't need to be hugely expensive, I have some Babyliss ones that do the job. And a side parting will really suit her :)

SilverHoney · 07/09/2015 13:38

If her hair is straight she won't need expensive GHDs, but I do find straighteners are good at smoothing and making hair look at bit more finished. Afterwards my hair is also less likely to tangle. I would say no to sea salt spray - that's more for a messy look. A serum or shine spray maybe, to make it a bit more swooshy Grin

TotalConfucius · 07/09/2015 13:39

This is my dd. (The two legged one.) You have clearly tried to steal her.
Her hair is washed in salt free stuff. We never condition the roots. She has a few inches of ombré in the bottom in a light caramel lay colour and from the chin down the sides are feathered (all done by hairdresser, not me with the kitchen scissors). Luckily the school are tolerant of hair colours which occur naturally but no pinks or blues allowed.
Hair is always blow dried and the roots around the parting are dried from the top and underneath to give lift, and always down the hair shaft.

When I was around this age I had mine chemically straightened. I hated my early teen hair and found it so embarrassing.

They claim results last for a few months but mine was years and it was so much more manageable.

GummyBunting · 07/09/2015 13:42

I have quite lank hair. These are my tips to make it look fuller

  • Baby powder. Using my fingers I put baby powder on my scalp. It soacks up any grease and adds volume.
  • Eye shadow on the parting. Move the parting to the side if you can, and then colour in the exposed scalp with a dark brown eye shadow. It makes it look loads fuller!
  • Using straightners, curl the ends. This takes just minutes and changes the look of your hair dramatically. Just a slight curl so the hair doesn't just hang there, but falls into a wave, which will create movement.
  • Don't wash every day!
TripTrapTripTrapOverTheBridge · 07/09/2015 13:49

Side parting.
No conditioner on roots.
Possibly some layers and sweeping fringe?

It's the flatness on top that's the issue really. Although she is absolutely fine as she is and shouldn't have to do anything to please others. So a big proud smile on her face to show she's proud of who she is!

TotalConfucius · 07/09/2015 13:53

It doesn't look like she has any issues with condition or frizz to me. I really think a change of parting and reducing the weight of the length at the front by layering/feathering. If this is done from the chin down then 'up dos' are still an option.
DD wanted something done with the colour as she felt hers looked a bit 'witchy'. We went for the ombré as if it was a disaster it could be cut out and still leave her with a bit of length.

WhoTheFuckIsSimon · 07/09/2015 13:54

Some great tips, thanks.

I had no idea about not putting conditioner on the roots so will tell her that. Will have a go at blow drying upside down and also heat down the shaft, neither of which she does.

Confucious - Your dd does look very similar. She's lovely and the ombre colour on her hair looks great. Not sure it would be allowed at dd's school. Will ask dd if she thinks it would be.

The comment about people who spend an hour on their hair not having much go on inside their head made me giggle and is quite probably true. Cowbags!

Oh and will try the baby powder as well. Quick, easy tips are ideal.

I've got some GHDs and will try these on the end to add a bit of a wave.

Baby powder on very dark hair might be a bit of a mess. Better to get a dry shampoo aimed at brunettes.

GummyBunting · 07/09/2015 13:59

My hair is very dark, baby powder goes invisible. As long as you don't over to it obviously. Then you look like a ghost.

Oh if you want a volume booster, forget the baby powder and get this stuff from Tigi called "sugar dust", it is amazing, you cannot see it at all but it does the same thing, absorbs the oil and pumps it up, much better result than BP, I use it every day. Also a little back combing helps.

TheSpottedZebra · 07/09/2015 15:51

She absolutely shouldn't be teased for her hair, but really comments like 'people who spend an hour on their hair haven't got much going on inside their head' are a bit shit, IMHO. I manage to be both intelligent and into doing my hair - they're not mutually exclusive. Knocking someone for doing their hair or conforming to body standard x is just as bad as mocking someone for not doing their hair or not conforming.

TheSpottedZebra · 07/09/2015 15:56

As well as using straighteners (which I maintain are horribly damaging for frequent use), she could try using a big round bristle brush to blow dry her hair, to smoothe it out. As PP have said, dry the roots upside down, and rough dry most of the hair, then use the brush and ensure that the hairdryer blows along the start of the hair to make it smoother and less frizzy. With hair like that, she probably wants to totally dry it -up she leaves it to 90% dry, it'll frizz.

WhoTheFuckIsSimon · 07/09/2015 15:59

Sorry Zebra, I'm sure that people can spend a lot of time on their grooming and be very intelligent. I suspect such people would be intelligent enough to realise that bullying someone for not doing the same isn't very nice.

Will try a round brush, thanks.

Oh and ive ordered that Tigi stuff, half price on Amazon!

Dd doesn't know what a good mum she has! My mum wouldn't have given a shit either.

How about a babyliss big hair? I've got similar hair to your DD but running the BBH through it when it is almost dry leaves it mega shiny and swishy and smooth.

TheDuckSaysMoo · 07/09/2015 17:43

Second vote for babylis big hair. I bought one a couple of weeks ago and it leaves my frizzy hair bouncy, swing and smooth for a couple of days.

ApollO88 · 07/09/2015 17:52

how about adding some texture and get her a curling tong. do it in large sections and it will wave nicely and look like beach curls. will look more "done". I do mine after washing it and it will generally last 2 days till it needs another wash. sea spray it the 2nd day to give it a bit of life

WhoTheFuckIsSimon · 07/09/2015 17:55

Ive got a babyliss big hair and also curling tongs. My have very similar hair to dd and neither of them make any difference to my hair. Maybe it's my technique, I can't even get ghds to make any difference!

TheSpottedZebra · 07/09/2015 18:20

I think that BBH are useless for thick hair, unfortunately.

WhoTheFuckIsSimon · 07/09/2015 18:22

Sadly I think that's it, heavy, thick hair which struggles to hold a style. It's why ive grown my hair and just scrape it back in a ponytail, takes me ten seconds!
