School run coat

I need a coat for the school run, waterproof as DTs are terrors and I need to hold their hands - umbrella not a workable option.

I have a north face rain jacket, but it's short (ie doesnt cover bum) and not that warm. My winter coats are not waterproof / don't have a hood.

Any ideas? I look the look of a parka but anything I've found is showerproof not waterproof.

Ideally under around £60.

Does such a thing exist?!

your local outdoor shop would be a good start.

There's the Target Dry Georgia that gets talked about lots of MN. It's ok, but a bit scrunchy - noisy www.targetdry.com/collections/all-ladies/products/target-dry-georgia-parka-for-women?variant=871180657

Look at the Viking kids website, lots of brilliant technical coats, relativly ££ but amazing quality, I've had my Didrikson a few yrs now and still love it --tho that doesn't stop me coveting another one--

How about something like this super light mac to wear as a layer between your clothes and your coat? I've got it and it really is very thin and doesn't have that sweaty waterproof feel at all:

I haven't worn mine in heavy rain yet but jane Cunningham of britishbeautyblogger site reckons it's genuinely waterproof as opposed to the showerproof label it has.

And/or muji freecut raincoat in a larger size, to keep in your bag and chuck on over your coat if it starts to rain?

Joules do waterproof parkas, I think they look nice for a raincoat but would personally avoid the joules prints and go for a plain one

DeathMetalMum · 03/09/2015 15:46

I have one by target dry. The one I have is a little tent like but keeps me warm and dry. Had I thought more I would have gone with one with a drawcord around the waist which would make a huge difference. They have some winter coats in the sale atm.

DeathMetalMum · 03/09/2015 15:47

I meant Trespass not target dry sorry.

Lagoonablue · 03/09/2015 15:48

Swats your budget? Try Seasalt website. They do longer, waterproof coats that are nice too.

Or Merrell. They always get a good write up.

Lagoonablue · 03/09/2015 15:49

Sorry I see your budget now. Seasalt a bit more than that.

Pigleychez · 03/09/2015 16:22

I had the Target dry Georgia. www.targetdry.com/collections/ladies-coats/products/target-dry-georgia-parka-for-women?variant=351685841.
Quite thin to feel but super warm.

I then bought the lightweight version for those showery school runs.

Landsend have some good ones, on sale too.

Millymollymama · 04/09/2015 11:05

At this price you can get waterproof but not breathable. I would look at the sales but I would try and pay a bit more and get breathable. House of Fraser had some good offers when I last looked. Google waterproof and breathable and see what comes up.

BoskyCat · 04/09/2015 14:19

You need this OP. I've just bought one. It hasn't been cold/wet enough to wear it yet but it looks pretty good for the price.

My previous one was a lands end squall parka, which was also great and only cost £60 in a sale. It's still going after several years but just looking a bit rough, but it's lasted well.

RoomForOneMore · 04/09/2015 16:56

I think I'm going to get this one, I like the colour and should cover my bum! Also in the sale - bonus! There are a few nice ones by Viking Kids. Was a toss up between this and the Seasalt Seafolly but the Viking one is winning at the moment...
