Having a good sort through the make up bag.

Honestly, how long do you keep products for before chucking them?
I find that my foundation runs out before I should throw it out, but everything else.....?

It should say on the product label. Tbh though I only throw mascara away Blush I pay a fortune for the rest... no way I'm chucking it in the bin! Not harmed so far famous last words

I know. I'm thinking of the expense. Just bought an eye palette for nearly 40 quid. I am not throwing it out after 6 months

I am religious about chucking mascara as I wear lenses and have blepharitis. Otherwise, I pretty much play it by ear. Stuff that's liquid or creamy in texture will separate if it's past its best, and usually smell a bit odd, but powder eye shadows and things will generally last well beyond what it says on them. If you're dipping your fingers in and out then there's probably a bit more bacteria knocking about - eg, cream blush. Powder blush and pressed powders can eventually become a bit manky where oil from your face is transferred via a brush unless you're absolutely fanatical about brush washing, but if you scrape off that layer they're fine underneath. (Disclaimer - not an expert and possibly a bit skanky.)

I only get rid of mascara but it's usually empty after 3 months anyway. Lip gloss also gets used up. Lots of my eyeshadow I've had for a few years. When I do get rid I will be a bit more selective and minimal.

I still have and wear urban decay powder eye shadows I bought when I was 16. I am now 30...

Some liquids products do noticeably go off after a while, but if it smells fine and goes on fine, I will wear it.

I agree with throwing mascara out regularly, and if things smell a bit off.
All scientist dh had to say about all the scaremongering about cosmetics use by dates is that healthy skin is covered in bacteria anyway, and your skin is the natural barrier that protects you from nasties.

I try to keep that in mind when I use the eye shadow I bought well before I had dcs (who are now in secondary school)...

I'm a benefit addict and lots of the stuff I use only on special occasions such as high beam. Not a chance I'm chucking that. I'm strict with my brush cleaning though and I think that plays a big part.
