What's your opinion of this dress - especially petite women.

I'm just 5ft tall, size 10. Will be wearing 3inch high heels.
Can this dress work? Technically it is A-line shape so I think it could work.

The dress is couture - about £1500 preloved and it'll have to be shipped in from the states. It's not available in the UK. It's a risk but looks amazing. What you think??

I hate strapless dresses. Not keen on the matt look of the fabric either. It looks like something off aliexpress.

PunkrockerGirl · 28/08/2015 22:06

Not a fan of strapless dresses either. I think the first pic looks like the model is pregnant and trying unsuccessfully to cover up th bump.
The second pic is better, but I suspect the model is very tall and slim and can carry this off.

PunkrockerGirl · 28/08/2015 22:09

Just looked at the second pic again, her shoulders and collarbone look awful Confused

dontpokethebear · 28/08/2015 22:26

It is a lovely dress (if a bit loo rolly at the bottom), but I think it would make you look shorter?

Sidge · 28/08/2015 22:32

I really don't like it - it looks like an unravelling tampon (sorry)

I'm very petite (5 foot and a blink and about 8 stone) and tend to wear simple dresses as otherwise I look lost in the detail. I want to wear the dress, not have the dress wear me.

I also think strapless isn't the best choice for us short women as they cut you in half visually, and we need all the length we can get.

Squooshed · 28/08/2015 22:44

Looks better on the model. The dress in the first picture looks like it's been attacked by Edward Scissorhands.

But as someone else said, taste in wedding dresses is such a personal thing.

sooperdooper · 29/08/2015 10:45

Don't like the second pic either, it looks like a jelly fish.

Go and try loads on, I had such a set idea in my head of what I wanted and when I tried things on I was completely surprised and ended up with something quite different.

I wouldn't spend that much money unless I'd actually tried the dress on elsewhere and knew I liked it in real life

CookieDoughKid · 06/09/2015 22:11

Update ladies/gents...

I've tried on a few more gowns and have funnily enough, ''mermaid'' style dresses really suit my petite frame. What are your thoughts on this dress?

or something a bit different - this slinky number?

I've discounted the very first dress I posted here as it's too 'loo roll' !! I think I will always think of loo roll - thanks mumsnetters!

Being petite (I'm just 5ft) - I've also discovered complicated sequins/pattern designs really detract away from my neck and face :( so I think the simpler the better.

I prefer the 2nd one. The first will completely overwhelm a petite frame.

Dowser · 06/09/2015 22:40

Don't like any of them op. you're a lovely petite woman I'm sure you can get something that wows , not drowns or looks odd like that last one.

Have a good look around . Go on. Make us proud!

tethersend · 06/09/2015 22:46

The second one is great.

TheMotherOfHellbeasts · 06/09/2015 22:51

I loved the first dress (the original) but I'm not keen on either of the updates ones. One of my friends got married not long ago, and she got her dress second hand, it was, I think, La Sposa Fanal, it looked very mermaidy and she is very petite, it looked amazing, one of the best wedding dresses I've ever seen.

Dowser · 06/09/2015 22:57

Nice if you like something a bit more asymmetrical

Baconyum · 07/09/2015 00:06

Sorry dowser but I think your suggestions are all very similar and quite boring. Also lace doesn't show up well on photos.

Burnet · 07/09/2015 00:20

Do they make petite wedding dresses? I'm five foot nothing but I had a really casual wedding.
I like the second one of those two last ones. I fear the first would swamp you, and if you aren't tall, there won't be enough out of you for all that skirt material. So you'd lose the whole effect. Half of it would be cut off for a petite version surely.

Baconyum · 07/09/2015 00:28

Wedding dresses are usually originally made based on a height of 6' for the simple reason that when altering to fit its easier to remove than add material particularly with certain skirt designs.

They can also be taken in up to 3 sizes, lots of brides lose weight as they plan a wedding through a combination of nerves and being too busy to eat!

Baconyum · 07/09/2015 00:29

Also when is the wedding because depending on where you order from it can take up to six months for delivery.

Baconyum · 07/09/2015 00:29

Sorry should have added, for fishtail designs sometimes a manufacturer will process to order but not always.

CookieDoughKid · 08/09/2015 20:30

Thanks folks. The wedding is next year in August so lots of time. I am looking at Le Manoir in Oxfordshire as the venue so I'm after something uber elegant. Thanks for your suggestions dowser. Lovely shapes but I'm afraid I'm after a more clean line architectural modern dress. Lace isn't quite for me unless in very small doses :)

IMO, the second was the best, but for a petite frame, I'd probably looking more at vertical lines than a strapless, which tends to have horizontal lines. The shape of the second also breaks your silhouette and might make you look shorter too.

I'd probably go more for a V neck with a more streamlined look towards the skirt.

Something more like this www.bestbridalprices.com/alfred-angelo-modern-vintage-wedding-dresses-style-8501-p99864, although this may not be your ideal because of the lace.
