Knee socks

Why is it so hard to find something so simple?

I just want chunky-knit socks, knee length, preferably cream/oatmeal/white sort of colours.

I don't want 'technical' socks, or 'extreme hiking socks'. I also don't want them to be 65& acrylic/polyester/'mixed fibres'.

Does anyone know where to get socks that are cotton or wool or a mix, and don't cost an arm and a leg?

I don't mind a BIT of man-made fibre but really want them to be mostly natural.

What size are your feet? I'm a size 4 & I sometimes but children's socks in m&s as they do size 4. You might struggle to find knee high socks in adult sock ranges

PetiteBateau · 23/08/2015 15:06

*but = buy

OnlyLovers · 23/08/2015 15:12

8/42, unfortunately,

There are quite a few, but they mostly seem to be a mix of noxious sweaty man-made fabrics. Or they're thermal, and I don't need them that warm. Or they're 'high-tech' performance socks and cost £30 or something. Hmm

Have you tried new look or h&m?

OiledBegg · 23/08/2015 15:24

Next?

PetiteBateau · 23/08/2015 15:25

Soes 'the sock shop' still exist??

OnlyLovers · 23/08/2015 15:37

New look and h&m polyester city/ankle length only.

Ditto Next.

Sock Shops exists but again, loads of man-made fibres. Or vastly expensive cashmere socks, which I love but cannot justify!

Found some OK ones in the House of Fraser sale though.

M&S usually do a selection of knee length socks but only in the winter.

PetiteBateau · 23/08/2015 16:00

What about tk maxx? Winter stuff is starting to drift in

OnlyLovers · 23/08/2015 16:18

Yes, I'll go in to TK Maxx this week (the website is rubbish).

Thanks all!

Celtic, 90% wool but not cheap!

I am also an 8/42 and have bought men's turnover cuff wool socks from John Lewis in the past. They'd be knee length if you turned up the cuff. Thing is wool is not cheap (it also needs some nylon/polyester in for durability) and socks are also tricky to produce, so "non-standard" type socks will be expensive.

Google Smartwool too. They do normal socks as well as technical socks and their Women's large goes up to a UK 10.

OnlyLovers · 23/08/2015 16:33

Thank you! I am tempted by the Celtic ones but my bank balance wouldn't thank me...

They don't necessarily need to be wool; a wool/cotton mix or just a thick cotton knit would be fine too. I'll keep looking.

OnlyLovers · 24/08/2015 09:30

I want the same as wear them under boots and over tights all winter as my feet get old. Best ones were from m and s two winters ago but they are thermal and now a bit threadbare. I also have some Elle stripey ones from somewhere.

OnlyLovers · 26/08/2015 10:29

mewkins, I've received my order (very promptly!) from MySocks and can recommend these.

They're on the large side, though (I'm an 8), so maybe see if they come any smaller depending on your size.

They're not thick, so if you like thick socks for boots you may need another pair on top of them. I love them though!

Look online for discount outlets selling outdoor wear. Not just hiking but riding wear too or local tack shops.

mewkins · 26/08/2015 22:24

That was quick...i think I need thicker ones (cold feet!)

OnlyLovers · 27/08/2015 09:46

They have thick ones too and a 'winter socks' section: here

Aldi or lidl, really erratic supplies. However, I got some lovely ribbed wool socks from Aldi for the last two years for £3.99 a pair.
