Key trends for AW15- AKA "please help me avoid looking frumpy in AW15"

S&B types - save me from a uniform of skinny jeans, long-sleeved t-shirts with boots and a floaty scarf.

What will stylish types wearing this autumn/winter that I can try to tweek my current wardrobe (as I'm also skint so this has to be shoestring fashion) so I don't look quite so much like a SAH 30-something Mum of 2 who lives outside the M25 who used to make an effort...

Are we all going to be wearing a sea of burgandy again this year?

mrslebon · 10/08/2015 20:58

Key trends I've spotted are:

The 70s/bohemian e.g. flares, pussybow blouses, lurex polo necks
Shades of red, everything from scarlet to burgundy
Prints (big and swirly graphic prints and paisley in particular)
Faux fur/Yeti coats
Modern goth/Victoriana e.g. black lace high collar blouses
Velvet and brocade
Plaid

So how does this all translate into an everyday wardrobe?

You could swap the long-sleeved t-shirts for a polo neck and skinny scarf, or a plaid shirt
You could replace the skinny jeans with flared jeans
Or keep the skinny jeans and wear with 70s style tan knee boots with a block heel
You could throw a faux fur gilet over the above

Any other ideas anyone?

or NOT go to a Brady bunch fancy dress Wink

never buy too early in the season IMHO

wait and see

Quickchangeup · 10/08/2015 21:05

Don't think I can actually help but I too would be interested in finding things to update my wardrobe a bit, literally on zero budget! I was kinda counting on there being a sea of burgundy though as I have several burgundy items which I will drag out come autumn! SAH 30 something mum here too.
Last year I binned all the floaty type scarves and took to wearing shirts under my jumpers in a preppy sort of way which I found made me look more "put together". I also bought a smart coat in the sales which I'm looking forward to wearing. Will watch this thread for suggestions!

DinosaursRoar · 10/08/2015 21:08

ah, sort of agree normally Mary - just sick of summer not really being here and fancy thinking of when it's acceptable to be wearing snuggly clothes rather than putting on cardies a muttering that I shouldnt be needing them in August (much better to be wearing one in October saying "isn't it lovely that I'm fine with just a cardie/jumper in October and no coat!").

Plus there's lots of things in the sales which would be fine for layering, if I know what sort of colours and shapes, I can try to give a nod to fashion, if that makes sense...

Really scared of flared jeans, I'm a short arse, getting the length right would be key...

Polo necks would be nice and practical on the school run, I can do that, and probably would look good with flared jeans....

Hmm, nod to 70s, that's a good guide.

And big prints, so hit Boden then! Wink

Quickchangeup - I tried the shirt under jumper thing, but as I am rather short, it does look a little like school uniform-esque on me...

Came here to see what everyone is buying this autumn.

Looked at MaryberryE's link expecting wondrous things, which was the case. Have now got 'here's a story of a lovely lady, who was bringing up 3 very lovely girls....' ear worm. Ta MaryB.

MaryBerrysEyelashes · 10/08/2015 23:45

looks up and down around thread

DinosaursRoar · 11/08/2015 08:04

So what are we doing with boots this year? Knee high? Ankle? Is it back to knee highs with skirts if we are channelling the 70's and ankle with jeans...

OP posts:
Floisme · 11/08/2015 09:14

Are pussybow blouses meant to be 70s? The only person I can remember wearing them was Miss Moneypenny Grin

DinosaursRoar · 11/08/2015 09:23

Floisme - see, i think Miss Moneypenny was a fabulous style icon for the over 30s, but alas as I no longer work in an office, it would look a tad excessive for the school run...

Lord, am I going to have to do big hair rather than just run the straighteners over my mop while shouting "shoes! No, your school shoes! Put them on now. Stop tormenting your sister! Well you had socks on 10 minutes ago, what have you done with them!?!?"

OP posts:
DinosaursRoar · 11/08/2015 09:24

oh and pussybow blouses always make me think of Jane Fonda in 9 to 5, but wasn't that early 80s, not 70s?

sanityforlunch · 11/08/2015 09:30

I live in a big city and I have yet to see a single person in flares (thank god, I would look ridiculous in them.)

Will they catch on in the autumn?

MaryBerrysEyelashes · 11/08/2015 09:40

They've been promising glares every year.
Like they say military coats, you know the stuff.

DinosaursRoar · 11/08/2015 09:46

hmm, I've not seen any flares as such, but I have seen lots and lots of wide legged, floaty summery trousers this year on the young, coupled with short tight crop tops flashing a few inches of toned belly (of which I am rather jealous), so if can see that the move away from the "skinny bottom half with volumious top half" silhouette has started. Not a bit stretch from that to flares/widelegged winter trousers with a tight top.

This does seem distressing as I can't see that wide legged trousers or flares look good with a baggy top, so I'm goingto have to wear something a bit more fitted over my stomach.

OP posts:
burnishedsilver · 11/08/2015 09:56

I haven't seen anyone wearing flares either.
I see a lot of people wearing girlfriend jeans. People are really looking for a change from skinny. My prediction is thar in 2 or 3 years time boot cut will be the norm. Theyre already entering the high street under the guise of flares.

MaryBerrysEyelashes · 11/08/2015 10:04

I hate those pyjama bottom type trousers. Look cheap

MaryBerrysEyelashes · 11/08/2015 10:05

I tried on some boot cuts from the loft. Felt so weird

DinosaursRoar · 11/08/2015 10:26

So, avoiding jeans generally this winter...

Any clues on skirt lengths, if we're all a bit 70's, does that mean knee length A line? (Hope not, terribly unflattering on short arses like me).

RepeatAdNauseum · 11/08/2015 10:29

There were lots of flares in central London yesterday.

Including one huge pair of flares, which got stuck in the tube doors.

DinosaursRoar · 14/08/2015 19:14

Mabelbee - here's the suggestions!

OP posts:
DinosaursRoar · 14/08/2015 19:19

Sorry, bumped for someone on another S&B thread, but I have been thinking about this, think polo necks could be a winner.

Have also decided to de-frump myself by making an effort to always put on at least once piece of jewellery, although might go more down the bracelet and earring path if doing high necks.

OP posts:
MabelBee · 14/08/2015 20:44

Right, here and watching. Could be down with the A-line skirt and I have seen some lovely lace/victoriana stuff online today, but not sure that it would necessarily suit me. Especially because a lot of it is cream and I have 6 grubby hands on me at any given time. Definitely not into the flares! But also quite intrigued by the jewellery route. That might be key.

DinosaursRoar · 14/08/2015 22:19

have had a little look on the "look books" on a couple of websites, and trying to work out how a short arse can do 70s

Was thinking this a line denim skirt could look good as a 'nod to' rather than looking like I was doing fancy dress. And quite like this dress in a "9 to 5" sort of way, but think it might be a bit too 'office wear'.

Also had a look on Karen Millen's look book - the 'cropped trousers'/cullottes look does seem quite classy on the site, but I think I'd look rather dumpy in it, and might need ot stick to heeled boots.

Guessing we're doing chunky heels, which seems a bit more 'school run' friendly than high ones...
