Does anyone want to do a minimal/capsule wardrobe

Karbea · 10/08/2015 11:09

For autumn (sept-Nov) with me?

Been reading unfancy, project 333 and an article about Steve jobs/Obama who had/have capsule wardrobes.
I've recently thrown out loads, but still have too much.
Anyway looking for wardrobe buddies!

Have a look at point eleven, looks like good advice for when to splurge and save.

I was thinking about how nice it will be to splurge on some things, I wish I had a better idea of how much I waste in primark etc each month as they I could add that all up to know what my spurge budget could be... Also I was thinking it'll be a more considered purchase as it'll be filling a gap rather just buying anything.
For example I got a suede jacket from Mango at the weekend, but I've already got a lovely leather jacket so if I'd done this last week I would have saved myself some money.

I'm going to tidy up my accessories and the wardrobe I dumped all my extra shoes in earlier in the week, I suspect they'll be casualties.

This has had a good effect on other parts of my life too, last night I made dinner with leftovers from the fridge, lunch was made from random things from the fridge too. Feel very virtuous!

twinky - I am skint and still losing my baby weight so more sainsburys at the mo. I already own the dresses for example and most of the shoes, also already have the blazer, scarves and grey striped top - its just everything else on the list really!! Its a bit early to go finding chunky winter knitwear.

I really like the idea of less but better quality and nice outfits that work together and can be put together quickly. This is my trial season. I am still worried about looking a bit boring but then I currently hate virtually all the clothes I own and not a single item of them sparks joy.

I might try M&S esp for vest/strappy tops as I am sick of primark ones as they never fit or wash well and having such a small selection they will get worn a lot.

I went fantasy capsule wardrobe shopping online at john lewis last night and 5 items in I was £300 plus in! Its going to be a mindset change for me. I am sure if I added up all the money I spent in a year on stuff I never wear, don't like, does fit right, will slim into etc etc I am sure I will be equally horrified!

ProjectPerfect · 12/08/2015 16:11

I love the theory but there is no way I dan manage the practice - I'm super organised and streamlined in every other aspect if my life - have no problem throwing clutter but my god my wardrobes are a mess. I just can't let clothes go

ProjectPerfect · 12/08/2015 16:12

And I'm a bloody magpie, I buy stuff l like regardless of whether it suits me or fits me and I never wear it.

Karbea · 12/08/2015 17:03

What shoes/boots are you selecting? I thought I knew but now I think I've too many pairs of similar things.
Right now I've selected:
Suede leather mid heel pixie boot.
Suede mid heel ankle boot
2 x tan mid heel ankle boot (possibly swap one of these out)
Orange trainers
Pinky/tan ballet pump
Nude high heel pump
Khaki suede high heel pump (possibly swap out)
Walking shoes (for dog walking)

I'm considering mid heel tan long boots, orange strappy high heels (strictly eve shoe), mid heel brown cage shoe (can be worn day or night with jeans).

Thoughts?...

I've selected four belts and four scarves.

Shoes wise my initial thought is

1 black flats - to wear with dresses and jeans, brogues or similar - don't own these yet.
Black suede shoe boots - mid heel
Black ankle boots - good for walking
Brown mid length boots, high heeled
I am considering a light coloured pair of ankle boots? Not sure yet.

I would love to add a pair of knee high boots but I have MASSIVE calves and cant get any to fit.

I prob should add my walking to school trainers - hideous but very comfy.

I am a sahm with a limited social life so IF a rare dressy night out crops up (party season so possibly) i have lots of pre kids shoes that I can drag out of the attic - thinking of my black and white nine west heels or strappy sandals but wont be counted in my 33.

I have been worrying about whether I will look really boring in jeans and jumpers/ or layers all in a similar colour palette but after looking at pininterest I can see its accessories that make the look interesting problem is I am rubbish at that too, might need to add more accessories...ummmm.

KARBEA - sounds like a lot of shoes... but what do I know? Also hadn't thought of belts, I need to add two to my list, what to replace ???

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 12/08/2015 17:33

Until half term (ie early Autumn) I have the following for casual:
Black Nikes
Leather Converse
Suede ballet shoes
Leopard ballet shoes
And two pairs of heeled ankle boots for going out.

For Winter, I'll lose the ballet shoes and Converse and replace them with black knee high boots, brown knee high boots, and black and brown flat boots.

My current gap is black leather ballet shoes, although I'd rather like some red ones too.

I'm going to just keep adding stuff in and then do a count up. I reckon I'll be nearer 40.

I've just found another lot of shoes hidden in a cupboard Blush and 4 very similar brown bags Confused. Creating a nice big pile for the charity shop.
I'm so glad we are all doing this!

I'm not even thinking about winter, I'm just focusing on sept to end nov, will worry about winter mid nov Grin, biggest issue is the weather in sept could be very different to that in nov...

detectivelund bags are my next issue after shoehell...

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 12/08/2015 17:50

Bags bore me. I have a black Kipling tote for work, a black packpack and a grey Kipling every day bag. I have a couple of others, but they very rarely get used.

MaryBerrysEyelashes · 12/08/2015 17:53

bags bore me too

just dont get it

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 12/08/2015 18:15

All I need in a bag is for it to be light and to fit in the stuff that I need. Beyond that, I care not.

Karbea · 12/08/2015 18:16

I love bags and shoes! I was picked on as a teenager by the cool boys for my shoes... I blame them.

I'm at 50!

That includes everything except undies, gym kit, sleepwear and jewellery.

I've a couple of weeks to cut it back more.

It's all in one wardrobe and it looks amazing!

I thrown out and still had to keep loads of crappy accesories, why I needed so many cardboard belts I will never know!

I've just had a look in the wardrobe. And have selected a handful of things for ebaying.

Am trying to whittle down the wardrobe slowly. I think if I did it all at once I'd panic and would just rebuy everything.

desperatelyseekingamovingdate · 12/08/2015 20:32

damn .....bags.

I don't think I will count my hideous mum backpack, I use it to lug nappies, wipes and bottles of water around in, I use it as I have to.

Must replace something on my list so I can have my brown suede bag. Luckily I only really have the one and it goes with most of my proposed wardrobe.

I am struggling to differentiate between autumn and winter? Because for the last few yrs I have been pregnant or loosing baby weight I have tended to wear the same thing come rain or shine (currently wearing velvet jeans in august). Any tips guys?

Karbea · 12/08/2015 20:33

I've been on a bit of a journey with my wardrobe. I had my colors and style done in the spring and have slowly been throwing away and replacing things that were the wrong colour. I then forced myself to wear everything in my wardrobe, if I hated it it went to the charity shop. Most of the time if I just disliked it I kept it, I think previously I was a bit of a clothes hoarder I had a lot of things that were way over 15 years old. So doing this has forced me to review again. I'm definitely throwing out more than I'm buying at the moment, but still buying rubbish or things I don't need which is a rubbish habit that I'm hoping this will break.

Oh Blessed, a kindred spirit.
I'm read Marie Kondo and am despairing and although my underwear drawer is now very tidy I look at the bulging contents of my two big wardrobes, four chests of drawers and a massive ottoman (don't even want to think about shoes and handbags) and feel somewhat sick.
I just can't work out a 'capsule' there's too much 'stuff'.
Maybe should just grit my teeth and do what she says Hmm

Playthegameout · 12/08/2015 21:20

I can't add much to this but did just want to say Remus, you have the style I'd love to have if I wasn't short, fat and covered in toddler detritus.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 12/08/2015 21:29

Play That is very sweet of you, but I am also short and now 'fatter' than I was (ie a lumpy 12 now instead of a 10!), and though I no longer have toddlers, I'm pretty messy myself!

Imagine my Pintrest pictures, on a short and dumpy vaguely deranged looking person with messy hair, who's been dragged through a hedge backwards several times.

Coastingit · 12/08/2015 22:36

A question for those of you (if any) who like me live in skinny jeans. How many pairs do you have? In my current living out of a suitcase wardrobe I have two pairs. Dark indigo and mid blue distressed. I think three would be fine to have a cleanish pair to hand every day, I have a grey pair I am missing.

I do have summer dresses, shorts and a skirt but it's been a bit cooler so the last week or two it's been jeans.

I totally LOVe the minimal crisp rotating wardrobe thingbut isnt anybody else struggling with the sheer erm..impractical messiness of their actual life...
I cant spend MORE on individual items - because I get so upset when they are ruined by - cooking..."helpful washing" from people who havent read the lable..and "I really have no idea what ! that stain is...." sort of thing....oh and gardening - and painting and...all that stuff I actually spend time doing
I'm not trying to put a downer on this but with a 33 item wardrobe I would have to get changed so often....
but...I was wondering ...if a really nice denim apron might help here - something I wouldnt be ashamed to answer the door in - but isnt quite the nylon housecoat my grandmother lived in...
anybody got something like this - or manages this fantastic streamlining when work is messier than a desk job - but not bad enough for a boiler suit ??
