Does anyone want to do a minimal/capsule wardrobe

Karbea · 10/08/2015 11:09

For autumn (sept-Nov) with me?

Been reading unfancy, project 333 and an article about Steve jobs/Obama who had/have capsule wardrobes.
I've recently thrown out loads, but still have too much.
Anyway looking for wardrobe buddies!

Sticks tongue out at Mary. Grin

I do wear it all - but this is about only wearing some of it for a certain amount of time, in order to simplify things! Although, to be fair, the chances of me actually sticking religiously to it are very slim.

Marking place. I'm living out of a suitcase this summer and it's absolutely fine. Better than fine, I don't miss any of my clothes. I should chuck them all!

But can't join in until I'm home again. So will lurk for inspiration if that's ok.

blessedenough · 10/08/2015 21:01

I am in, recently lost some weight and need to sort my clothes. I have tonnes of throwaway fashion that I never throw away so just tonnes of ill fitting, badly made primark and tescos clothes. The ironic thing is I am about to move house to a place with a dressing room!! - sounds fancier than it is think big cupboard with window.

Due to house move I packed up everything that didn't fit and everything that wasn't seasonally appropriate. I did this for the whole family and I am no longer bogged down with endless washing, it has revolutionised my life.

I have been searching all over pininterest and project 333 - I am just worried I don't know what my style is and that I will look frankly boring. I am not naturally blessed with a flair for fashion. However I love the concept of less but better quality.

candybar · 10/08/2015 21:08

I'd love to do this.

I've recently lost 3st in weight so I had to have a cull of my wardrobe as I've gone from a size 18 to a 12, I was holding off buying anything expensive as ideally I'll lose another 10lbs.

I'm currently have the following:

Grey skinny jeans
Black jeggings
Dark blue jeggings
Light blue skinnies
Dark wash straight leg jeans
Black leggings

Black waterfall cardigan
Nude cardigan
Navy 3-in1 jacket
Navy quilted short coat

2 x black t-shirts
Grey scoop neck t- shirt
Navy t-shirt
Charcoal t-shirt
Black vest top
Navy & white Breton
Cream long sleeve top
Black shell top
Black floral top

Navy & rust shirt dress
Black dress
Floral dress (might get rid of this one)

Various converse
Ugg boots
Black ballerinas
Gold ballerinas

I do tend to wear the same things day after day so I think I need some inspiration, also because I'm inly 5' 2' it's quite difficult to find clothes that fit well.

blessed one of the things that unfancy mentions on her blog regarding not having boring wardrobes is to have three of each thing. Then have one plain, one statement and one in between.
Would that help you?
When I looked at my wardrobe earlier I didn't do this as I hasn't read the article until now. But it seems to make perfect sense to me.

Try using the app closet space to organise your wardrobe. You take photos of all your clothing items and accessories and then you can build outfits and link to your online calendar.

My capsule wardrobe consists of plain separates in neutral colours but I allow patterns on dresses!

poocatcherchampion · 10/08/2015 21:21

I have really pared down my wardrobe by reading Marie kondos book. Which basically says only keep things you love.

For the person who mentioned refilling empty drawers - it is quite addictive having lovely neat drawers where you can get to everything easily.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 10/08/2015 21:21

Love this jumper, but cba with hand wash.

Karbea · 10/08/2015 21:29

Beautiful colour, I always wash hand wash stuff on a low cycle in the machine.

You all have so many clothes! I only have a small number of each thing. I have literally one pair of black trousers, one dress, etc. I do need a wardrobe revamp though as I am changing jobs from something very casual where I lived in jeans/hoodies to needing to look more smart for seeing clients, but not as smart as if I was in a corporate setting. I am seeing it as an opportunity for a change, to look and feel more confident/well groomed. I would love to build a good capsule wardrobe over the next 12 months or so.

QuietIsland · 10/08/2015 21:38

I had no idea about the Vivienne files! I'm hooked.

detective we are only planning the next three months (autumn). I've currently included one. But for winter I think I'll probably need three.

Well done CANDYBAR I have lost 2.5 St but have only gone from a 22 to 18, I am hoping to loose more so don't want to spend much, I am using this as a trial run and will probably still go to primark! Until I am settled at my goal weight.

Thanks for the suggestion KARBEA, I hadn't heard of that blog so will go and investigate. Although I have tonnes of clothes most are really really old and I tend to wear the same skinny jeans and striped tops so in truth with a selection of beautiful well chosen co ordinated clothes I would probably have more looksthan now not less!

detectivelund I guess it depends how could it gets where you live in November.
Where I live I'll definitely want to be in boots by then.

Just spent a happy hour trawling through the Vivienne Files. Great stuff! It looks like I need to start with a good quality pair of well fitting trousers. I think I prefer navy or dark grey to black although black seems like the easier option. Any suggestions for good places to shop for a curvy size 16-18? I had some of these www.box2.co.uk/plus-size/clothing/outfits/robell-navy-black-white-or-silver-3-4-stretch-trouser-10334.aspx Robell trousers, a German brand, they are pull on so no button or fly and were very comfy. I just wonder if they look terribly middle aged (I am middle aged - 47 - but don't necessarily want to look it!)

desperatelyseekingamovingdate · 11/08/2015 19:58

This sounds like such a great idea, I have a bulging wardrobe yet nothing to wear! I like the idea of a few good quality, well made clothes as opposed to throwaway fashion.

I have looked at a few of the blogs mentioned.

Now my problem is I have zero fashion sense, no style and not much interest in shopping but I would like to look groomed and presentable.
I have 2 small DC and am a sahm, I struggle a bit as I haven't lost my baby weight yet and I feel like a heffa but am working on this.

I had my colours done years ago and I think I have an idea of what suits (ish), I am a fat hourglass shape (16-18) - does anyone what to critique my selection? - suggest where I can get the following bits etc.

Tops
1 Long sleeved black top -fine knit (to wear under 2 dresses)
Striped tops x 2 - 1 red and 1 grey
3 vests/ strappy tops in white, grey and black (for layering)
3 jumpers - Oatmeal, navy and burgundy

Coats
Gilet and striped hoodie
Cream coat
waterproof blue (hideous but good for keeping dry)

Bottoms
1 Dark Grey jeans
Dark blue jeans
Black velvet jeans
Skirt - no idea what sort or style yet

Dresses
Teal cord dress
denim dress
black and white dress - smartish

Completers
Blue blazer
Navy cardi
Burgendy and/or grey - big knitted cardi wrap thingy, bit glamorous maybe???

Shoes
Black suede boots
Brown boots
Black brogues
Oatmeal ankle boots

Accessories
3x scarves
Purple jewellery set
Skagen jewellery set

Any suggestions or pointers gratefully received.

Noooo!

I love my clothes collection.

That's what makes life frivolous and fun.

I've bought a lovely ethnic/ new age type skirt today for when I get that boho feeling.

I'd hate to just have a small pond t

Dowser · 11/08/2015 20:52

To dip into!

tinkywinkyshandbag · 12/08/2015 13:09

Desperatelyseeking - your collection sounds pretty good, is this what you have or what you would like to have? Boring but M&S is pretty good for basics. What's your budget? Would it stretch to Hobbs/Toast or is it more Sainsburys? Mine sadly is the latter! But I am planning to buy fewer, better quality things over the next year or so, and hopefully take advantage of sales etc to help me build up the basics. I think it's fun to buy the odd cheap thing from H&M or whatever if you just fancy it but ultimately they don't last long and generally the fabrics are not good.
