DS2 needs a haircut

He's resisting but it hasn't been done since Feb H-T , so I've put my foot down and booked a friend (who's a hairdresser) to come and do it next week.

He has a lot of hair, each hair is fine, but there's a lot of it IYSWIM and ATM it's basically a short back and sides with a longer fringe, that's well and truly grown out. The fringe is touching the end of his nose and the back and sides are just below his ears. Apart from a bit round the bottom at the back and sides it's pretty much all one length.

I've said he can keep it long but it needs to be cut properly and tidied up.

First, am I being completely unreasonable? I get that it's his hair, he can have it cut exactly as has wants it but I've decided that I need to put my foot down about him being quite so scruffy.

Second - any suggestions for a style? He's 12yo, light ginger/blondish hair and has no interest in clothes/style whatsoever.

Until recently friend was working as a support worker in an education unit for teenagers excluded from school, so I think she'll be able to deal with him! Actually he'll be fine once she's here but he's not happy with me ATM.

My DS2 is 18 mo and put his head on the highchair table and wailed while our hairdresser cut his hair (mobile hairdresser)

How about looking on pinterest? searches under surfer hair, thick hair etc etc That might engage him into thinking about what he wants his hair to look like?
My DH has no ability to picture things in his head so I always have to show him pictures of ideas (in any area) for him to get any kind of interest. I suspect it's a common trait in males...

Everyone will tell you "it's his hair" but YY if he cannot see through that fringe you have no choice. It needs cut!

TBH , I'd let him keep his scruffy hair as long as it's clean, until the week before term, then have it cut - as a compromise.

Back in my world, I detest long hair on boys, my DS (15.6) has a 3&5 and he's gone to the same barbers since he was a baby.
He did say "I want to grow my hair" , I said "Fine, work something out with the barber so it looks tidy though"
He came back with his usual (Like Sheldon Cooper, they have his Hair Cutting Records )

What are the school rules on haircuts? If you can hold out until term starts again, you might find his head of year telling him so you don´t have to...

Agree that he should keep his hair clean and combed, but style is up to him.

Whenever there is a thread about boys with long hair (not that the OPs son's hair sounds that long) somebody always talks about schools not letting them have long hair. Are all of these schools boys schools, as I can't see any mixed schools specifying how long pupils can grow their hair.

When my son had long hair every time my mum saw him she would make some remark about the fact that his school let him have it that long. His school does not have a uniform but I don't think she believed me that they didn't care what his hair was like.

School rules say no "extreme of fashion", and you have to tie long hair back. That is all. I wonder what "extreme of fashion" is. But I suspect long unkempt hair is not extreme.

Pizzas I am a teacher at a mixed school. The boys at our school cannot have their hair past their collar, or skinhead. Anything in between is ok. In three years only one boy has come in with a skinhead and he was just suspended internally for a day. Fairly often, boys´ hair is too long, and they are warned verbally by the head of year, then the head of year e-mails home, then the head. No one has gone past that stage, but if they did it would be internal then external suspension. Same for students of either sex who dye their hair unnatural colours.

I think it´s grossly unfair and sexist that the boys have to have short hair, and have brought this up in staff meetings, but the management stands firm and most of my colleagues agree with it too.

I don't mind him having it long if that's what he wants but it needs cutting, in the same way that a girl's long hair needs trimming to keep it tidy.

Happy the no extreme colours is fine in that it applies to everybody, and all long hair must be tied back would be fine - it's the different rules for boys and girls I object to, there's no justification for it.
