Would this dress look ok with a belt?

Just bought this dress in the sale

But it makes me look massive around the middle I am a little bit massive anyway . I thought a belt might work but what kind? Wide, narrow? What colour?

I'm clueless and skint so I normally look a bit of a mess.

Maybe try a narrow dark tan colour? Or a gold-ish one?

The fabric looks quite thick/stiff in the photos so not sure a belt would work too well if it feels bulky?

Also the layer around the bottom may look a bit ott with a belt? In which case a wider, stiff tan belt might help to balance it out.

Sorry, totally unhelpful!

I'm not sure about belting a shift dress.

dexter73 · 02/08/2015 08:55

I don't think it would suit a belt.

Bluecheese22 · 02/08/2015 10:09

I wouldn't wear a belt with that style dress, if you do decide to wear one make sure it's skinny. Wide waist belts are very dates now.

Agree with the above, tan skinny belt might look ok. This type of dress doesn't suit everyone - I am an 8/10 and quite tall but anything not fitted round the waist looks awful on me.

burnishedsilver · 02/08/2015 11:08

I can't imagine a belt looking well on that dress.
I suggest you return it. If it makes you look big around the middle you'll never be comfortable in it.

imjustahead · 02/08/2015 11:13

think i'd return it too, that shape and length is hard to feel good in, if you don't feel good iyswim.

I am round, and have one similar shape and thinner but it's bit longer, so hangs better.

Unless you feel you can rock it, it might be false economy. That's sales for you tho, i love them but get caught up in them!!

I have big boobs and that sort of dress does me no favours.

They do make my waist look smaller!

My rule (learned the hard way) is that if you're trying to make a way to make it Ok when it's brand new, you'll never wear it. You need to think it's perfect when you first buy it because you won't like it more once it's "this old thing". Return it.

iwouldgoouttonight · 02/08/2015 16:02

Thanks all. I hate shopping so I try to get it over with as quickly as possible, I don't think I've ever bought anything I think is perfect! I like it in the shop and when I first try it on and then as soon as it becomes 'my dress' I go off it!

I've just worn it today without a belt and I think it was ok. I'm never going to look great though so I'm not going to trawl round the shops again.

Thats a great rule further, I'm going to adopt it!
