This is my current hair colour in all its tragic glory....the cut is an ear length bob with a side fringe....I've a fat face. I've dyed it dark for years ..... Do I grow out the grey (I'm 35), go lighter...?

Do you feel ready to grow out the grey ? If not how about some ash blonde highlights to blend them in ?

Waywarddaughter · 01/08/2015 20:40

Not really..... I used to dye it v dark and I moved to red a year or so ago but I can't maintain it as I wash my hair daily.... I was thinking ash blonde but will it just go orange???

Not if they use a toner and then you can stop it going brassy by using a purple shampoo

Waywarddaughter · 01/08/2015 20:45

I'm being v brave now... This is the full horror whilst walking the dog.... What would you do, save for buying a paper bag?!

Ash blonde hair won´t go orange if you use a toning shampoo such as Touch of Silver or Lee Stafford´s purple shampoo - you don´t have to use it all the time, once a month should be fine to prevent any brassiness. The rest of the time, use products for coloured hair, and take advice from your hairdresser.

Without seeing the rest of your face it is difficult to advise whether ash blonde will suit you. Did you have blonde hair as a child? (Some hairdressers ask this - apparently if you were blonde as a child, you will suit it as an adult). What colour are your eyebrows?

Happy36 · 01/08/2015 20:47

You look great! The paper bag is certainly NOT needed. I actually think the reddish tone really suits you.

Waywarddaughter · 01/08/2015 20:53

Happy36, I offer you a large glass of vino and perhaps some spectacles! Do you think stick with red ( it's faded to hell here) or opt for the blonde? I was chestnut brown as a child and am now about 40% grey.....

The red does suit you And you look lovely :) no paper bag needed at all !!!! I think you would get away with ash blonde as well as you skin tone looks cool rather than warm . The highlights might help with regrowth as the roots will blend in easier than a block colour but the red is also nice ! Not much help I know ;)

Waywarddaughter · 01/08/2015 21:02

That does help, since having kids I can't seem to 'see' myself in the same way so an objective view is incredibly useful and cheering!

I've no real advice about hair colour although I do think the red looks nice.
I just wanted to say that your face definitely doesn't look fat and your brows are a fab shape.

PrettyObvious · 01/08/2015 21:10

Your hair looks the wrong length for the shape of your face, I would say go shorter.
Stop colouring, it never looks authentic.
Get a good cut and take it from there.

cookielove · 01/08/2015 21:17

I think you are very pretty :)

Have you tried lush hair dye blocks I think the vibrant red would suit you :)

Waywarddaughter · 01/08/2015 21:17

Thank you mummypig!!

I wanted to go shorter, prettyobvious, but was scared....what sort of cut in your opinion?

Cookie love, I shall look that up!

No colouring advice as I'm dithering about going grey but just wanted to say how young you look!

Waywarddaughter · 01/08/2015 21:51

Crikey GaryBaldy, ta! What's stopping you taking the plunge? I've nothing but admiration for those that do but don't think I have the gumption. My mum has always been au natural and went grey at 21-she's always looked ace.

How about a mahogany red? Doesn't wash out as quickly.

Happy36 · 01/08/2015 23:56

Yes, agree with whoever said great brows. I am not sure about cut.

Ask your hairdresser about the blonde. I really like the red, but that´s not to say the blonde wouldn´t look great too.
