Wearing silk

I love the texture of silk, and I'd like to own a silk dress and maybe a few tops/ blouses. But...unlined silk is see-through! Isn't it?

How do I make silk clothes wearable without innocent parties getting an eyeful of my norkage or worse..?

Silk lined cotton clothing?

Wear a cotton cami underneath?

I've got quite a few unlined silk items though, and none of them are see through.

Uniqlo is a good place to start if you are unsure.
I machine wash at 30 and have had stuff for years. Silk is extremely tough and strong. I think dry cleaning is a bit of a con for silk.

Silk is clingy but not see through.

There are many types of silk that differ in weight/momme and the way they are woven. You should expect to pay more for heavier, higher momme silk than you would for, say, chiffon, but then it won't be see through and it won't unravel at the seams after the first wash.

I have lots of clothes made from heavier silk, they are not see through. (Do you remember the days when most Zara summer dresses were made of silk...) Almost all of them also have a lining, silk or cotton, not nasty acetate. Silk/cotton is a lovely mix too. I have just let go of a black empire line silk/cotton LBD that was my cocktail party staple when I was pregnant. I tried it on and it still makes me look pregnant ;)

Forgot to say that you can buy silk jersey too. I have a DVF dress and COS t shirt made of silk jersey, fab material.

Silk/cotton is my favourite fabric mix, but it's so hard to find now.

Worth keeping an eye on Massimo Dutti and Monsoon sales for silk. Potentially also Whistles but only in the sale as their prices are beyond silly now.

And just wear a nice black bra really. It's hard to look too trashy if you're wearing proper silk :)

Remus- gap had lovely silk\cotton shirts in their sale (online and shop). Not at all see through either.

Pretty much all of my work shirts for spring/summer are silk. I agree, it's hardwearing and feels much more comfy than cotton which just doesn't drape as well. Under pale colours, I wear a nude bra and a silk cami (Rosie for Autograph from M&S - gorgeous).

I mostly wear silk for dresses and work tops and none is see-through (I think anyway)! I generally don't wear a cami. As previous posters have said, silk/cotton is lovely too, although not necessarily thicker. Also I completely agree that silk is a far more robust fabric than they would have us believe - washes well, dries quickly, iron while still damp and you're done. Keeps its shape well too.

You can sometimes get amazing deals in the Cos and &Other Stories sales, and it's better quality silk than Uniqlo ime.

Ooh thank you for all these lovely recommendations. Maybe I just need to look for heavier weight items. I love silk/ cotton and silk/cashmere blends but dont find them often.

I got a black silk shirt in a charity shop for £2.99 last week. Have already worn it for 3 different nights out!

I just wear a nude bra and a cami if pale silk.

remus- this was the one I got but it looks really meh there!
It was in a gorgeous sea-green colour, which really brings out the colour of my eyes (may not apply to you!), but they had grey, black, and blue ones too IIRC, all in the sale.

I have also occasionally got silk shirts from sainsburys, but that is definitely more see through. Hoobs and jigsaw often have them too.

I like that colour, Amazons, but it does nothing for me. Also prefer proper button down, rather than just the top half. Will have a look though, as the grey sounds tempting.
