I've come to the conclusion that I am really boring

Just as the title says I have come to the conclusion that I am really boring. I was hanging clothes up in my wardrobe tonight and I sat on the bed and looked at it and the only colours in it were black, navy, grey and the only bright colour was a few splashes of red. Everything was very plain, I do like a stripe though and had lots of tops which were very similar.I tend to find something I like and stick with it. For example I found a top I liked in Oasis so bought three of them in black and navy!

I think getting older, lack of time, pressures from job, children etc I have just got lost somewhere and forgotten how to dress. For home I am usually 3/4 length plain top and jeans and work usually a plain top and trousers so very much plain Jane. I feel very much intimidated by new fashions in shops so tend to just stick with what I know.It took me forever to take to wearing skinny jeans for example!

Anyone else like me or any useful advice. Thanks.

it sounds like you've got good basics and you dont have to go overboard with lots of. colour. an easy way to bring in colour and funk up your look is to focus on accessories to complement your existing wardrobe. ie high heels in lime or snakeskin, a bright but good quality handbag, lots of silk scarves, statement necklace, bangles, fedora hat, a few belts. look in mags for inspiration.

Albaba I feel exactly the same about my clothes. When I look in the wardrobe it is full of dull boring stuff with about 3 items that I actually like.

I have started looking on Pinterest which has given me good ideas of "looks" and items that go together well, but finding these is another matter.

I haven't had this done but could you invest in getting your colours done?

MyRightFoot is on the right lines but you could also try a few tops in colours/prints you like and buy one that is 'different'.

I bought a bright yellow strappy top in Oasis this spring and it really lifts my face and shows off highlights (blonde hair) and goes well with a tan and black.

You could also look through ASOS - their style advisors online can advise you on what to wear.

If you're really daring go to John Lewis/other dept store or eg Top Shop and get a personal stylist to help you.

Pinterest and magazines help too. just ring stuff you want to try, eg palm print.

You sound like you need someone to be your personal stylist. Not so much what you're buying, but the fact you find it dull.

i find cheap bags in bright colpurs can look tacky, if i buy a cheap bag it tends to be black. you dont have to spend lots or designer for a good quality bag. op you need to find the colours that suit you. if u dont wana colour specialist, go round the shops a\d hold different coloured tops under your chin and go from there.

OP I was you a few years ago. I was stuck with a mostly black wardrobe with some reds, and wore mostly jeans and long-sleeved tees. I've found my style, it took some work and lots of mistakes but I found my best neutrals (blues and greens and whites - I look much younger now) and more contemporary shapes (for example, I've worn an army jacket with espadrilles a lot this summer, pairing it with shorts, dresses and even a jumpsuit). I think a stylist or personal shopper could be very helpful. I've had my colors done (a mixed success - I found some of the styling and makeup advice was stuck in the past) but blogs, magazines, Pinterest and Instagram have been much more useful.

Life is too short to wear clothes that don't make you happy. If you could dress like anyone, who would you choose? What is it about their look that you like? Find & try on some similar clothes, focusing on the colour & shape to work out what suits you. If it makes you smile, wear it!

I could have written this a couple of years ago. I like very plain, classic clothes but god I was boring even myself. I still like very plain clothes but I have changed from black and navy to putting more colour in my wardrobe and now have blue, coral and my favourite is varying shades of green. I also bought some really nice jewellery that I love (again, all simple but that's just what I like) and layer it. I will also brighten up a look with the ubiquitous scarf, which I know seems to be much hated on here these days, but I think a very plain outfit can be given a real lift with a nice scarf. I also love shoes, sandals and boots and think that the right footwear can make or break a look.

Yep, normcore is intentionally bland and only works if you are young and extremely hip. Middle aged + normcore = Texan tourist

The way you dress isn't a problem. The fact that you find it boring, is.

If you want to find out what's in style and how to wear it I would take a look at some style blogs. They're free and you can easily identify which ones appeal to you, depending on your age, job, lifestyle, etc and also whether they're written by Brits, Americans or whatever (which will be relevant if you try to buy items they recommend).

If that seems too overwhelming, how about buying a fashion magazine once a month? The high fashion bibles like Vogue and Harper's will show you what's on the catwalk, but if you want high street stuff try Marie Claire or Grazia or something like that.

i never knew i didnt suit black close to my face ! yet away from my face its ok same with brilliant white
they also gave me makeup and hair advice
