In need of recommendations for products for DP's oily skin

My poor DP has a very oily T-zone and is currently getting lots of spots coming up on his nose. Its very unlike him, but he seems to be getting quite interested in products to treat and clear his skin. I'm dry and dehydrated so have a nice little stash of products of my own but am not sure what to recommend for oily skin

On Sunday, he used the Superfacialist (Una Brennan) clay mask with salicylic acid in, and it did a great job at clearing the blackheads on his nose. He's also been using my FAB pads on his nose when a spot comes up.

All advice and recommendations welcome!

Your DPs skins sounds a lot like mine was. Acnomel is the only thing that's ever cleared it up. I was put off trying it for ages as I didn't have acne, just blackheads and some blemishes, but within a week, they were completely gone!

LRP Effaclar range is fantastic for oily skin. Effaclar Duo has salicylic acid in and is great for clearing spots - has really helped my spotty teen. They do face wash etc to match.

Lotta my son has oily skin and one of the most difficult things for him to get his head round was the realisation that if you keep stripping oily skin of oil, by using astringent products, the skin works overtime to add more oil to the face. The key to washing oily skin is to treat it gently with a non-foaming cleanser. No Dove soap or any soap - it strips the skin, dehydrates and won't help with spots.

Along with the excellent advice already given I would suggests something like cetaphil for the face. Escentual is also very good. And he should still use sunblock.

And check out this website. It's non sponsored and all the advice and info is from former and current sufferers of acne. They have an easy to follow regime and loads of unbiased reviews. Also avoid the Proactive regime which is often found shoving itself down people's throats on Teleshopping channels as they have this system where once you start ordering it's almost impossible to get hold of their 'customer care'.

Thanks Gingermum. You're absolutely right about stripping all the oils out. It may be too much of a stretch to get him to start cleansing properly but then again, I never imagined he would buy and use a face mask so we'll see!

Also to add, this is usually an internal hormonal issue, so for long term results, inner health needs to be addressed. Internally evening primrose oil or borage oil are great for hormone balancing, and also he needs to look at what he's eating/drinking: cut out dairy and sugar and up water intake for a while and see if things improve. Like Gingermum says, he needs to be very gentle with the skin and not strip it of oils. I actually find using natural plant oils ON the skin very helpful. Cleansing with the Oil Cleansing Method and moisturising with Rosehip Oil seems to work very well for many people.

Yeah, lets just say his inner health is not good! I know that diet plays a huge role in how your skin looks, will mention that to him too

I have oily skin and use Cetaphil daily skin cleanser and lotion. Its for sensitive and dry skin but has really reduced my blackheads and hormonal breakouts. I'm recommending it to everyone!

Ava I use the oil cleansing method (a combo of Ayumi castor oil and rosehip oil) - and a clean washcloth daily (buy seven or eight) and my troublesome skin is now smooth, even toned and clear. But you are absolutely right about drinking enough water and a good diet. I know a few people whose spots cleared up soon after they dumped the fizzy drink habit.
