Cheap day dresses (and sandals) for an overweight hourglass -help please!

Just been shopping and only came back with pyjamas!! I used to be able to wear sheared waist, on the actual waist, but the one I tried on today looked ridiculous - my chest looked even bigger and it was too creased around the skirt. The empire line one (yes, I know, I know!) made me look like a walking pair of boobs.

So what do I do? I am overweight, quite a lot lol but am losing, I have strong legs which now have added chunk to them so need to skim the thighs, I am still hourglassed despite this and my waist is 12 inches smaller than both my chest and my hips.

I need a couple of cheap day dresses, not tight up top but not sack like, but they need to go in at the waist a bit. Need to be ok with leggings -apologies for the fashion sin there!!!

Also need some pretty sandals to wear with the above but they must have an inch or so wedge heel as can't walk in flats.

Any suggestions? Or an instant diet??!!!

Brew place-mark, absolutely no suggestions but hoping someone will be along soon!

I'm an hourglass and when I was four stone heavier (last year) I used to live in tea dresses (cover tops of arms, fitted at the bust/waist, flare at hips) or wrap dresses (but depends how busty you are) with tights and leggings.

New look, Very, Dorothy Perkins, Primark all sell these quite cheaply. You can also pick up more expensive ones on ebay (House of Fraser, Miss Selfridge, Oasis, Warehouse etc)

New look are good for wedged sandals.

H and m have some cheap dresses for £4 in the sale perfect for the beach/bar/site seeing. They could be worn over a t or best too

Djangor3725 · 09/07/2015 17:17

I agree with the tea dress suggestion. Have you looked at any retro styles -
Lady Vintage dresses go up to size 32 - good value too.

Tweezertastic · 09/07/2015 17:18

Best top

BeetlebumShesAGun · 09/07/2015 17:41

Dorothy Perkins have some great t-shirty, jersey dresses that go in at the waist.

Oliver Bonas. Great for hourglass figure and generous sizes. The dresses are fairly short, but doesn't matter if you're wearing leggings anyway. I love their style, and it's good quality. It's my favourite shop, and I'm an overweight hour glass Smile

Thanks ladies, still haven't found much but will have a look, I walk a lot and am sweltering in jeans!!! It's given a push on the diet though, another stone and I should be able to fit into some existing dresses, and I have loads for when I'm back at my normal size (been planning to get back to that for ages and built up a weight loss wardrobe -oops!) so best get moving, I lose fast so if I can stick to it...

I'm an extremely busty hourglass and tho not overweight, do easily look matronly in dresses. For me a shift dress which is snuggish on top looks best - anything waisted makes me look like the prow of a ship.

Pipbin · 11/07/2015 17:52

I was going to suggest Lady Vintage too. Very flattering for a bigger lady.

Pipbin · 11/07/2015 17:56

This is what I am wearing right now. Beautiful, easy to wear dress. I have a smallish bust so I've needed to put a couple of stitches in it to keep me decent.

I came on here to say Lindy Bop too. They have a lot of styles, some of them suit me and some of them don't so its worth trying a few. They wash well and are flattering to wear. I ordered about 10 dresses the first time to try different styles then all but two of them back.

TripTrapTripTrapOverTheBridge · 11/07/2015 18:00

I understand that sassy know the feeling! Always avoided shift styles as thought it would look wrong but can try it.

Nice dress Pipbin but it's a bit OTT for normal day wear

Not at all TripTrap I wear that one all the time. I'm honestly wearing it right now.

TripTrapTripTrapOverTheBridge · 11/07/2015 18:05

Different strokes I guess. It's more a day occasion style to me, particularly with the bust styling, which as a J would also be revealing and obvious on me. It would age me too tbh

Each to their own Trip
It's a dress down dress for me as i'm usually in full dress and petticoat.

TripTrapTripTrapOverTheBridge · 11/07/2015 18:09

I love 50's style full dresses, wouldn't wear them on the school run though :)

Pip that dress is gorgeous. I think I'm going to buy it. I'd wear it on a normal day too, with flip flops. On a special occasion I'd dress it up with heels and jewels.

WanderWomble · 13/07/2015 13:17

I have a Lindy Bop dress and agree that it's too much for a day dress (for me). I'm either in work clothes or jeans/t-shirt though so maybe that explains it!

Would something like this work for you OP?

TripTrapTripTrapOverTheBridge · 13/07/2015 13:23

Nice colour BUT I'm only 33 and would feel aged in that, if that makes sense?

Milllii · 13/07/2015 23:23

Do you like the style of any of these?

The have them in different colours and plain style as well.

Don't want to rain on anyone's parade, but as a busty (32G) size 14, I found the Lindy Bop dresses that I ordered too short waisted. '50s Empire line' wasn't the look I was after.
