Help with hair - fed up with dip dye

I have dark hair and had it dip dyed months ago. It's all broken and in a terrible condition now and wishing I never had it done. I want to go back to just the one all over colour but don't know if it's ok to just use any dye? Can't really afford to go back to the hairdressers as I'm still struggling on a part time wage after mater its pay!

I'm not an expert but I wouldn't dye it while it's in bad condition.
Can you get a trim and do a few home conditioning treatments before your next dye job?

This article has a few tips.

Or - as I did a couple of years back - use a conditioning rinse. One of the one colour bottles that washes out, Nice and Easy do one for around £3 in Superdrug or Sainsburys I used the light golden brown or the light ash brown. Really good condition afterwards too. Don't use anything you need to mix up though. Aveda's damage remedy treatment (just on the ends and leave overnight) is fantastic.
