So I coloured my mid brown greying hair copper red, it looked awful... I considered chopping it all off but hairdresser twisted my arm and bayalaged me! It's now flat brown at the roots and generally brassy everywhere else. I've a box of loreal brown lurking upstairs but I'm trying to hold off as I'm sick of dark, blocky colour..... Today I went to a very reputable colourist for a consultation who suggested 'heather tones'.... To me it looks like more shades of red and brown.... I appreciate that they have to work with the orange but I'm now in a quandary - do I throw yet more money at this with the top colourist or do I cut my losses and go shorter/slap a box of dark brown on and start again?

Colour remover? That personally didn't work for me but it does for others apparently. I bleached mine then did a light ash brown then had highlights (at the local college!) looks ok. Better than the Orange/grey look!

Presumably the colourist you went to for consultation is at another salon. If so, I would go with their advice and ask them to sort. Might be good to get the 'new' salon to cut length a bit too. If they are good, cut and colour should complement each other.

And just tell top colourist what tones you want to avoid.

Either do the colour remover and go through the pain barrier of having odd coloured hair & a hair cut. Or go to a top colourist. Do not dye over the top it just never ever works.

Nothing wrong with orange!

I would suggest popping a semi over the top in a chestnut tone. That will blend the colours better, tone down the brassy hue and as it washes out gives glints in the hair.

Don't go above a level 5 and look for 5.3 for chestnut if that is what you want to achieve. Loreal casting is good.

I have just returned to the thread having had it cut to my ears at yet another salon (both the first and the second with the swish colourist gently swerved my desire to go any shorter -presumably because I am a size 20 with a double chin) that did not hesitate and charged me one third of the price. I am really happy with the cut, it has got rid of the vast majority of the brassy tones and shrivelled bits. I'm not going to dye over it myself now, I think I can bear with it now until it grows out. Otherwise I might see how this salon works out or go back to the second salon in a while. I fee better now -though expect DH to be a bit when he sees the do!!

ash tones should neutralise red tones, perhaps an ash brown at the same colour level of the red that you used?
Do a strand test first so that you know exactly what the result will be
