doc martens size and cheap to buy advice

Buying a pair for daughter
She's a size 5 in converse
Has slightly broad foot at front (can find it tricky for some ballet flats for example but not hobbit feet)
She is after 1460 in cherry Red
What size?
Where's the best ( cheapest) to buy from

I have wide feet and Dr Martens fit well. I'd say lengthwise they are true to size. I wear the same size (8) in DM and Converse. They are wide! You can often find them cheapest on Amazon.

I'm a size 6 in Converse and a 6 in my 1460 DMs. Fit should be fine.

Ebay also worth a try.

What are your views on 'womens ' fit normal or 'comfort ' vs men's / unisex?

I'd go for the same size as the converse. To be honest I may be very wrong but I thought that particular type of dm was unisex sizing anyway? I've got those exact boots and i'm a 6 in them and a 6 in converse and I have very wide feet.

I'd look on amazon, sole trader, cloggs and schuh to see what, if any, offers they have. Also try ebay for bargains - lots of people buy them and then can't be bothered to break them in so you get ones that have only been worn a few times for a fraction of the price (I know you probably want new ones just thought I'd mention it). Do be careful of "like dms" that aren't actually dms on ebay though.

And when you get them look up videos of how to break them in on you tube. You'll probably need them! Many people myself included find them painful and hard at first but once you've broken them in they are comfy and fantastic.

My personal method is to wear 2 pairs of thick socks and plasters on the back of my heels... and if I'm really desperate I wrap them in a tea towel (!!)so as not to damage the leather and pound them with a hammer ... my dh thinks I'm nuts for doing that but it does work!

DD asked for some bright pink ones for her birthday. She's a 4 and we got a 4.
Bloody pricey footwear for an 11 year old and certainly not to my taste but she absolutely loves them.
We tried taking her to the big DM store at Gunwharf in Portsmouth. Got all the way down there and the ones she wanted were only available to buy online.
We got her to try on other size 3 and 4s to compare and ordered them online. Perhaps with Amazon? Cost something like £74 with delivery.

I have wide feet. When I got some running shoes I was advised with a 7 and half. I have the DMs linked above in a size 7 and they fit lovely. I also have a shiny purple pair.

Agree with above, beware of the early stages. DMs need 'breaking in'

Regarding pricing. I got my first pair when I was a teenager and I was still wearing them 5 years ago. I only stopped wearing them because I left them in a hotel. My own fault. So yes they do cost a bit, but last forever.

Daughter is 20
Wanted some forever. She's been in hospital since mid April fed up and this will be a nice present.
Top breaking in tips?
She's got a sprained whilst in hospital somehow. X rayed no break.
It's causing a limp and is a bit swollen so support is good.

Thick socks. Plasters or extra padding at the back of the heel and leg at the top of the boot. Wear them little and often at first. Tell her not to wear them the first time on a day out or anywhere that she can't take them off for a bit.

Dr I have a feeling dds feet will grow plenty more yet! She won't be wearing them this time in a year I would say. But they were her choice.

cake I was just trying to justify the expense. Yes they are expensive, but they are good quality. Smile

We are thinking of getting some for DD1 - she's 7 so will not be in them forever, we will then pass them on to DD2 and then onto charity or to another family we know. Her school shoes never last a term so if we can get some that last a year it will be worth the price in the end. Though we haven't fully decided yet.

She said today while visiting dd in hospital and discussing these - why didn't you get me more?

The ones older dd had years ago and she remembers from age 7 were wierd but obviously lovely coz I chose them!

Totally see where you're coming from Dr, but there's no way dd2 will ever be seem dead in pink clumpy boots and she's only 1 shoe size behind! Our other dc is a 3 year old ds so not much chance of passing them on. They will be passed on to my friends dd who gets the rest of our cast offs!
I agree, they're well made and would be excellent value for money providing she doesn't grow any more...
