Sunspots/ageing vs. freckles?

I've never understood the difference. I've had freckles all my life. I have strawberry/golden blonde hair and blue eyes. My skin is fairly light but not pale.

I'm 38 now and keep reading about the awfulness of sunspots and how I must cover them etc.
is it just a name for freckles but only applied to older people?
I don't mind my freckles.

I thought sun spots were big blotches that increase chances of skin cancer. Might be wrong though. Think the difference is that freckles are supposed to be there and sun spots are a sign of damage.
