I want a perm but have thick hair

Would my hair hold the perm or would it drop out if you know what I mean.

I have always wanted curly hair but remember being told years ago that my hair is too thick and a perm wouldn't take. I know there are now new ways of doing perms and I would want a loose tousled look rather than tight curls. Do you think it would work?

I'm not much help I'm afraid, but you can getvperms that give you the tousled look? My only experience of perms were the horrible tight curls you used to get 20 years ago! My hair is naturally frizzy but doesn't straighten well! I'm watching with interest....

Have you tried thinning your hair from underneath with a thinning scissors? I do it to mine because my hair is so thick. I don't want layers, so I thin the portions of hair that are under the top hair.

The hair dresser thins it for me when I have a trim, would that work then do you think? Have it thinned out then permed? I haven't asked about perms yet as I get my hair cut rarely (only been once this year so far) and ive been wondering for a little while now if it would work.

Just google loose perm blackbetty I'm thinking similar to some of these.

My hairs just coming below my shoulder now so not sure if it would be long enough yet either!

Be careful OP, as lots of pictures that come up when you google "loose perm" aren't actually of perms. For example, Kate Hudson has naturally curly hair. Why the fuck would she get a perm??

On the bottom row, the middle picture could possibly be a digital perm, but the others are almost definitely curls from a wide tong barrel or straighteners with a rounded edge. I would bet money on it.

If you are seriously considering a perm, it's worth finding a salon which has a lot of experience, and asking to see examples of their work.

I don't know if it would work on your hair type (as it was designed for asian hair), but digital perming can give a very nice loose wave (although it does require styling to get it like that), and you won't lose too much length.

If you hair is just below the shoulders then even a loose perm would give you hair up to your chin.

Thanks goodness that's very helpful! I will ask next time I go for a trim. Is been growing out a pixie crop so it seems to be taking ages and I'm getting impatient for something different.

If your hair is short & thick, there is absolutely no reason that a perm wouldn't take. They would just have to make sure they use enough perm lotion to saturate the hair.

If it's long & thick, the weight of the hair will pull the curl out.
