Silver shampoo - recommends?

Runningupthathill82 · 22/06/2015 12:08

I've got ashy blonde highlights and want to buy a shampoo to keep them ash coloured rather than going brassy yellow (as has happened previously).

At the mo I use basic shampoo, Tresemme or similar, but my MIL recommended a "silver shampoo."

Ok - what is this, why is it bright purple, does it work and are there any particularly good brands I should go for?

Hair is naturally mid brown, chin length, wavy and prone to frizz...

Yep you need a purple shampoo. The purple counteracts any yellowing and keeps your colour in tact.

I have silver hair and have recently discovered Lush Daddy-O shampoo and it's excellent.

I have been using this Schwarzkopf one which is also great but I think I'm going to switch exclusively to the Lush one.

I have John Freida "Colour renew" shampoo and conditioner which is purple and it works brilliantly

MitzyLeFrouf · 22/06/2015 12:23

You can't beat Touch of Silver really.

NomiMalone · 22/06/2015 12:24

Can't say I agree Mitzy

I started off using Touch of Silver and it didn't enhance my hair colour at all and left it feeling weighed down.

MitzyLeFrouf · 22/06/2015 12:27

Oh I love it. Have used it for ages.

DrElizabethPlimpton · 22/06/2015 12:30

I use the loreal professional silver shampoo, it is very good.

NuttyCluster · 22/06/2015 12:34

I use Fudge clean blonde shampoo and conditioner once a week. It's very heavily pigmented so if you leave it on too long it can turn your hair a light lilac shade (which I like! Grin )

Truckingalong · 22/06/2015 15:29

Fudge is good but bleach London is even better.

Lovewearingjeans · 22/06/2015 16:34

There is a silver hair dye in superdrug, didn't turn my bleach locks silver, but gave it a very cool tone.

MamaLazarou · 22/06/2015 16:45

Second vote for Daddy-o. Smells amazing!

NomiMalone · 22/06/2015 16:55

Doesn't it Mama? I love violets so as soon as I saw they were an ingredient I snapped it up.

My only concern is the shelf life. The bottle I bought last Tuesday is already past it's date Confused . I might just have to buy a small bottle every week or so.

Runningupthathill82 · 22/06/2015 16:58

Thanks so much, loads of suggestions here! Do you tend to use the silver shampoo every wash, or every other wash? Or even less frequently?! I'm a novice...

I use it every time Running but like I say I have silver hair so actively want the faint lilac tone that the shampoo and conditioner leaves.

I'm not sure a blonde would need to use it as often. Maybe alternate between a silver shampoo and a clarifying shampoo?

I have the Osmo silver conditioner and don't rate it at all. Which is a shame as I bought a massive salon size bottle off Amazon which now sits gathering dust in my bathroom Angry Grin .

BleachedBarnet · 22/06/2015 17:07

L'Oreal Professional in the silver bottle, and Bleach London are my top two picks. I have silvery white hair so I use purple shampoo basically every wash and leave it a good few minutes. If you are just maintaining blonde and washing out brassiness I'd say use one every few washes.

One word of warning, in my experience they are a little bit more stripping than regular shampoo so combine them with an extra strength conditioner.

CordeliaFoxx · 22/06/2015 17:10

I use the John Freida one once a week.

FoodPorn · 22/06/2015 20:24

I use Bumble and Bumble which always seems to work well. The only thing I don't like is that it doesn't lather up much. I use it every few washes but should probably use it every other one really Smile

mulberrybag · 22/06/2015 20:28

Lee Stafford one from boots after a year of trialling with the aim for a slight lilac tint Wink this is the one I've found best fits the description! The bleach London is 2nd choice for me. This one leaves hair in amazing condition but doesn't give so much colour. As an aside the bleach London hair mask is Amazing and I use it daily to restore my bleach buggered hair Grin

Truckingalong · 22/06/2015 21:49

Agree with the lee Stafford and loreal ones too. They both give my hair a tinge of lilac if I overdo it. Am now intrigued with the silver dye as well but I suspect that on someone of my advancing years, silver would just end up looking like grey hair, rather than trendy young thing!
