Scarves - are they a bit 'last year'?

LesleyKnopeFan · 07/06/2015 20:37

I own a few spring/summer scarves. Some have skull prints which I won't wear anymore as I think have had their day.

I've just bought this

Here

Is it a bit 'dated' and if not, how do I wear it during summer (or do I save it for autumn)?

Thanks

Zara I think we are talking street / mass market fashion here. Exceptionally stylish people always wear what they like, your scarves look like that, the rest of us are followers. I had to check what DMBL40 is wearing. She used to be the queen of big scarves. I had to scroll back to April before I saw the first one...

pinkfrocks · 08/06/2015 17:21

Oh no- not the teal comment again Grin

WTF is wrong with teal??? And how does it appear on MN?

noddyholder · 08/06/2015 17:33

Don't like in summer at all but are standard boden type mummy wear here.

noddyholder · 08/06/2015 17:34

teal :) I hate it especially in interiors but also scarves.

DosDuchas · 08/06/2015 17:45

teal poor old teal

squizita · 08/06/2015 17:49

Whisper. .. my wedding theme was teal.

Pre mumsnet and it was "the" colour for weddings going by what was on sale.

It was that or black/red and dh didn't want an ageing goth wedding. Angry

Floisme · 08/06/2015 18:51

Teal is wrong? Shock I had no idea.

Will I get an S&B written warning?

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 08/06/2015 19:34

DMBL40 is lovely, but she really isn't who I'd want to model myself on tbh. I'm not a 'follower' and although I have some interest in 'fashion', what I am far more interested in is, 'Stuff I like.' One of the things I like is scarves. If I was a 'follower' I'd be wearing dungarees and Sam Smiths now, neither of which I have any intention of sporting, however, 'on trend' or, 'in fashion' they may have been decreed to be.

And to say that a scarf is, 'Middle aged' (However tongue in cheek it may have been intended) is, frankly, ridiculous.

SilverHawk · 08/06/2015 19:46

I'm looking for a scarf just like that. Would you say it's navy? I need navy...

leccybill · 08/06/2015 19:56

It's a bit meh for £25. Primark do 'em for £3.
I love a scarf. And a snood. I always seem to have a cold neck.

LesleyKnopeFan · 08/06/2015 20:52

I didn't say the scarf was middle-aged, I said it looked middle-aged on me. It was also what I intended to wear with it that aged the look.

Anyhow, i got my answer and the scarf has gone. I realised looked like I was trying to nail a trend that has died.

I ask these questions as I've recently lost my sense of style and what suits me, with so many 'fashions' around at the moment and all the instant access (style blogs, online shopping, etc), I find it all confusing. Plus I find myself liking trends that really should only be worn by teenagers or hip 20 somethings, then I realise I'm 40ish and it's not really right for me........

Silver, it's a kind of teal colour.

LesleyKnopeFan · 08/06/2015 20:57

Not really, it's a royal blue but I'd say ok with navy, it is a very nice fabric, silky but heavy, give it a few days and check back in the link as I sent it back today.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 08/06/2015 20:59

I didn't say it was you who'd said it. It was somebody else.

I get that it can be confusing, if you're not really confident with your own sense of style. But that's why following the 'rules' on here isn't actually terribly helpful - look at how this thread veers between, 'Yes to scarves' to, 'No, they are outdated and mumsy' to, 'They will always be stylish' to, 'They never wear' and back again! If one only wants to be, 'On trend' then one could just slavishly replicate looks from Vogue, or wherever, but it doesn't mean one would necessarily look good!

PS - Excuse nobbish use of 'one' but I didn't want anybody to think I was targeting them specifically!

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 08/06/2015 21:00

Never were - not wear!

Shadow1986 · 08/06/2015 21:04

I agree with whoever says it's a bit meh for £25. I don't think it's anything special. Think you can find something nicer for that money!

I love scarfs! I don't think they will ever go out of fashion but you might be right with skulls trend.

LesleyKnopeFan · 08/06/2015 21:10

You are right Remus. I have no idea how anyone on S&B dresses and with the greatest of respect to everybody and their individual style, I may have a hugely opposing idea of 'fashion'. So, a poster whose style I would appreciate and covet might say #yestoscarves.

Soz, thought you were referring to my comment. However, I AM middle-aged so really I should go with it......BlushGrin

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 08/06/2015 21:14

Maybe we should start a new 'fashion' of middle aged ladies wearing what the hell they like, scarves, ra ra skirts and puffball skirts included! Grin

LesleyKnopeFan · 08/06/2015 21:15

God yes, what a delight........you go first.......Grin

I have a silk skirt (ancient Gap, with a cherry print) that I still wear occasionally and is remarkably reminiscent of a ra-ra. I keep thinking I should 'retire' it but it is too cute! I have no claims to style though. :)

squizita · 08/06/2015 21:47

I have several mini kilts which are rather ra ra. My concession to being over 35 is I now wear them with leggings and boots not fishnets or bare legs! Grin

DosDuchas · 08/06/2015 22:27

the plural of scarf

is

Scarves

burnishedsilver · 08/06/2015 22:47

Twinklestein, bare legs in Winter ended soon after Sex in the City ended.

burnishedsilver · 08/06/2015 22:52

Scarves were hugely popular a couple of years ago and people just got tired of them and felt like a change. People tend to do that. It doesn't mean you can't wear them. It just means you won't see as many around 'cause they're not so much in style. For those of you who don't give a rats arse abouts what's in style, style and beauty is a funny place to hang out.

Twinklestein · 09/06/2015 09:43

Bare legs in winter are as much in on here as ever.

I'm living between London and Paris and everywhere I go there are people wearing scarves. Some are stylish, some are fashionable, some are more practical or classic.

Particular kinds of scarves, and a way of wearing them, had a fashion moment a couple of years ago, but that doesn't mean that now all scarves are 'not so much in style'. Style and fashion are not the same thing for a start, but equally people don't stop wearing jackets just because a particular jacket has had its day.

For anyone who give a 'rat's arse about style' style and beauty is not place to come. It's great for other things though.
