Scarves - are they a bit 'last year'?

LesleyKnopeFan · 07/06/2015 20:37

I own a few spring/summer scarves. Some have skull prints which I won't wear anymore as I think have had their day.

I've just bought this

Here

Is it a bit 'dated' and if not, how do I wear it during summer (or do I save it for autumn)?

Thanks

I have so many scarves, winter ones to combat the lack of adequate heating in Au schools, summer ones for the occasional biting Antarctic wind that can spring up unexpectedly. They have only one purpose, to keep my neck warm.

The "scarf to finish off an outfit" is alien to me, and looks a bit desperate middle-aged. < I am 60, so allowed to say this :o> It also explains why so many of my scarves don't quite match what I'm wearing. Meh.

Yes. Have had their day.

Accessories are currently tiny: little beaded bracelets and necklaces, super slender rings etc.

I think how you wear a scarf changes with fashion. On models they seem to be oversized and casually twisted but I can never replicate that look so don't bother with them unless for warmth in winter.

id still wear a scarf but it doesn't get wrapped around the neck. so imagine someone coming up behind you and draping each end of the scarf down so it just hangs over each boob.
like how swimmers drape a towel round their neck.

I stopped wearing scarves in 2014 because nobody else around here wore them and I felt stuck in the past. This spring I found a lovely one at H&M. I've worn it with a sleeveless jumpsuit and been complimented a lot (my default airport outfit, paired with silver high tops).

I think the big scarf and skinnies look has been over for quite a while. Clean lines are back and scarves just mess them up, and if you do 1970s outfits or flares they just add bulk in the wrong place. I see quite a few bandanas and artfully tied Hermes silk squares around here. The women here who still wear scarves pick neutrals that closely match the rest of their outfits - I saw a drapey khaki green scarf worn over a khaki top and it looked fresh a new. Some fashion bloggers have worn ultra narrow scarves, not sure whether it will become a mainstream look. I also saw an ultra chic Italian woman pairing a neutral scarf with bright tassel trim with a sweatshirt and sunglasses for a casual weekend look, she looked terrific.

I don't know if they re actually 'out' yet - there are still billions for sale in all the major shops. However they definitely DO come in and out of fashion - in my teens/twenties, even thirties they were non-existent except for those square ones with horses and brasses on them, usually worn on the head and tied under the chin by old ladies!

I'm with PP who say if you like it, wear it.
I stop wearing things if I go off them ... The idea of refusing to buy something cause it's "last year" makes me think "did you really like it in the first place?"

But then again I was wearing vintage in the 90s when it really wasn't the done think boak that sounds so hipster Blush and I cross reference current magazines with my collection of older ones back to the 80s, 70s, 60s, 50s when looking for ideas on how to style something.

I'm always very aware of the trends but don't either buy into them just because they're current, or throw out things I like because they aren't.

I have skulls and stars all over loads of stuff ... but have done for years.

Frugal, one of my friends wears an artfully knotted silk square, looks enormously glam.

I'm another one who looks really odd in scarves - why is that?

I might start wearing one round my head like a housewife from the 1960s. Wink

This thread is ridiculous. If there is one place never to ask for fashion or style advice it's MN.

It's all Boden, Clarks, M&S, teal, navy, bare legs in winter, and now nonsense about scarves.

Scarves are a staple accessory, the style, the print, the shape, the way they are worn changes, but scarves continue...

Back in the 80s & 90s when I was a hardcore fashionista I had a gorgeous Joseph scarf, an Armani one, a Pucci, a paisley Agnes B scarf that I still have, a Jean Paul Gaultier scarf that people used to collar me on the street and ask me where I got, and a Prada one that I framed etc...

If you need a scarf there's always some style that's in fashion that you can wear. And if you like it but it's not in fashion then wear it anyway...

I have always worn scarves, I find them comforting, wear what the hell you like.

Personally I don't like the one you have linked to, it looks a bit M&S, but that's just my taste, not yours, you might love M&S Grin I would be more likely to wear the skulls, but prefer massive abstract prints.

I've just given them up (except for when it's cold) as I realised I may as well wear a sign round my neck saying, 'Look at my jowls everyone'. But it's quite comforting to think I'm actually 'on trend' Grin

I was just thinking "Ooooh, I like that scarf" when I realised I have one nearly identical but in a camel-ly colour instead of the blue.Hmm

I don't think it's particularly summery but would look good looped around your neck if you're wearing something like a denim jacket or maybe a leather jacket. So maybe if it's a very cool summer, and you're wearing a jacket with a bit more substance. Otherwise, I think maybe better in the autumn (when I tend to wear mine).

If you have your own sense of style and wear it well it scarves will always look good. Personally I couldn't care less what bloggers wear or what magazines tell me what is in. I wear what I love.

I buy most of my scarves from //www.apeacetreaty.com ethical and has some beautiful designs. Have my eye on this.
