Does anyone want to talk perfume?

I've just had a bunch of samples delivered from Les Senteurs and other places.

Frederic Malle - Portrait of a Lady:

I suspected I wouldn't like this and I was right. Awful. Powdery acrid rose patchouli. An old cat lady in a dank Victorian parlour. And the cat is incontinent.

Frederic Malle - Musc Ravageur:

All is forgiven. This is in my top 5. Opens like ferret piss but dries down into pure unadulterated sex juice.

Long Courrier:

One of the most interesting scents I've tried in a long time. An ozonic gourmand. Really good so far. Smells like the salty sea and orange oil and then chocolate and cedar.

Van Cleef & Arpels - Orchidee Vanille:

A beautiful if slightly safe scent. Orangey and woody vanilla. Proper vanilla, nothing synthetic or cupcakey at all. With enough fruit and floral notes to keep it interesting without overpowering.

Armani Privé - Cuir Amethyste: Oh my word this stuff is incredible! Leather and violet. Smokey and purple and churchy. Just amazing. A divisive one I think.

Trucking I'm waiting for a sample of Maai (Bogue) which sounds as if it might be exactly what you're looking for ...

Truckingalong · 08/06/2015 20:00

No leather or smokey smell mentioned at all about it though?

ZeroFunDame · 08/06/2015 20:04

Whoosh!

Take that!Grin

FrugalFashionista · 08/06/2015 20:20

Trucking I assume you have read this Bois de Jasmin post.

If you want sex and leather, a bit like Cuir Mauresque but a more Middle Eastern vibe, how about Leather Oud from the Dior boutique line, and Cuir Cannage for a feminine take of the same idea? There is a perfume blog called Nero Profumo by a Italian basenoter called Alfarom. He loves dark, leathery, animalic stuff and writes well, lots of perfumes in this style, worth a look? If you love, Naomi Goodsir's Bois d'Ascese and Tauer's Lonestar Cowboy (tarry!) are pretty hardcore.

Last day of coconut sunscreen hell, probably will be able to wear a real perfume tomorrow!

Truckingalong · 08/06/2015 20:31

Good grief Zero! Point took anyway!!!

Thanks Frugal, I'll look at those.

ZeroFunDame · 08/06/2015 20:40

Sounds fun don't you think?

Have you tried Onda? (Bloom has samples and bottles - but leave some for me.) Won't bother to describe - it is beyond words wonderful.

Truckingalong · 08/06/2015 20:50

There are so many! I had no idea.

FrugalFashionista · 15/06/2015 14:42

Had to resurrect this thread because today I'm wearing What We Do In Paris Is Secret.
Definitely One of the best names around. The perfume itself is perhaps not quite as good - whatever they are doing, it involves Tunisian bakeries for sure Wink

Any perfumistas still around or am I the only one?

SecondSunrise · 15/06/2015 15:31

I would like to be a perfumista but feel I am at Reception Level Fragrance School at the moment! I have been hoovering up the reviews on Fragrantica and made a list of samples I am after on Surrender to Chance. These are:

Diptyque Philosykos because it sounds so unusual and fresh.

Serge Lutens Sa Majeste la Rose ( I like Rose perfumes like Paul Smith Rose, but want something with a bit more longevity and interest)

Serge Lutens Ambre Sultan
Serge Lutens Santal Majascule

Serge Lutens Un Bois Vanille - I am a sucker for vanilla fragrance but would like something a bit more grown up, smoky, woodsy and spicy?

Etat Libre Like This Just sounds so intriguing and different to main stream stuff.

I would like any recommendations for something smelling like springtime woodland walks - fresh, mossy, ferny, hint of bluebell and lily of the valley. Any ideas?

Judydreamsofhorses · 15/06/2015 15:39

I'm in L'Air de Rien today. Probably too heavy for this time of year, but I love it so, and the whole "story" behind it is great.

Judydreamsofhorses · 15/06/2015 15:41

SecondSunrise SL do a sample set which might be worth investigating. ELDO do one too, and both are redeemable against the cost of a full bottle.

HellKitty · 15/06/2015 15:42

To the person who tried 'Straight to Heaven' by Kilian tell me what it was like? I tried 'Love' by Kilian thinking it would be amazing, fruity and floral. A bit of an edge like Angel or Alien that I couldn't place. It calmed down after an hour and was the double of LouLou by Cacheral (?) Shock

KiteKit · 15/06/2015 16:04

I love these threads!

Today I am wearing Tom Ford Costa Azzura. I am alternating between that and Tom Ford Oud Wood (dh's but I steal a spray from time to time) and Portofino Neuroli (my fav!) and Jo Malone Edwardian one - geranium and verbena

I always wore one scent for years at a time but recently have had a yearning to have lots to chose from so I am building my little collection up again. I also LOVE Tom Ford Grey Vetyver and Creed vetiver and acqua di param and Santa Maria novella - ADORE those 'cologny' scents.

shins · 15/06/2015 20:09

Jacomo Silences. I heard it was like Chanel No 19. It is not. Thin sharp top notes then powdery nothingy floral. Must be reformulated to death, bit disappointing.

DrankSangriaInThePark · 15/06/2015 22:16

I bought a sample of that too shins, it was nice enough, but very light and there wasn't that bitter oooomphy bit you get whacked around your face from 19.
Was reading on base notes it's been discontinued.

FrugalFashionista · 16/06/2015 14:50

I love Chanel No. 19 but Silences is very different, a drier and duller take on green.

Today I am wearing 1932 from Chanel. I got a mini right before our holiday last summer and the cool sweet jasmine iris with a more voluptuous heart reminds me of lovely hilltop drives and the warm breeze on the balcony. Ironically this also is a great office perfume, quiet and subtle.
