Skin and make up consultations-getting the best

I'm 47 and haven't changed my skin and make up routine for years and frankly I look and feel pants. I use whatevers on offer and I've lost confidence in applying make up correctly.

I'm out of touch and feel really intimidated at the prospect of going to a make up counter for advice. But I know that I need to.

How do I get the best advice or even independant advice so that I can get the best out of the experience?

I am more worried about doing this than I should be so any help would be so welcome.

Anyone?

Please save me from blowing money I can't afford and falling for the first commission based sales person who spots me.

You could try reading the Sali Hughes book Pretty Honest. It's very accessible. She also has lots of columns on the guardian website in which she reviews and explains products such as serums etc and explains how to apply. There are some video tutorials too.
