Hard Water Hair!!

Does anyone have a cheap way to soften hard water? Since moving to a hard water area my hair is gradually becoming fragile and breaking off. When I visit my parents in a soft water area my hair is completely different. I've read that adding bicarbonate of soda to bath water is good, but apparently it doesn't chemically soften the water. Any ideas?

Bumping this up. I live in the South East and every time i visit a soft water area I'm shocked at how much better my hair is. It's baby fine, fragile and the bane of my life, when I wash it in soft water, it's swishy and even the colour looks better. I find a final wash with vinegar in the water helps for a while but even this stops being effective eventually- Anyone?.....

Install Softener system for water?

Use jugs of boiled (an cooled) water to wash your hair leaning over the bath instead of washing it in the shower. Its a pita but you hair will be lovely.

I use bottled water in the final rinse. Makes a difference.

Vinegar in the final rinse, the acid counteracts the alkaline of the water. Just remember to wash it out!!

Have you tried putting on loads of conditioner, putting on a bath-hat and leaving it in for several hours/as long as possible. Makes it very soft!
