Changing from salon to home hair colouring

Hi
Due to a change in finances I think I'm going to have to colour my hair myself rather than get it done in the salon. Does anyone have any tips on good products, how to make the switch, problems to be aware of etc... Any advice would be much appreciated.

Do you have stubborn greys and need a permanent dye?

I have used a number of brands but keep going back to Nice and Easy as it is the only one that seems to cover my grey properly. The "Root touch up" packs are great to get rid of mid term regrowth. The colour does seem to have tones in it so it doesn't look too block like. My eldest DD helps me do the back. I have breast bone length hair and use a proper salon style brush for application rather than the nozzle applicator on the bottle.

I have gradually been going lighter as I get more greys so that it blends well and does not require dyeing so often. Quite a few people have commented how nice my hair looks. Makes me wonder why I spent/wasted so much money at a rather expensive salon in the past when was more flush.

Thanks for that. No grey hair but I've been colouring my hair for years - natural colour is mousey so not keen to return to that!!!

Don't use the packages from Boots, Superdrug etc they're not really good enough. You need to buy professional hair dies. I buy a peroxide and a professional colourant from Sallys (link below). Deepshine is a good make.

I mix two thirds peroxide with one third colour in a plastic bowl and leave on my hair for 30 mins before rinsing and shampooing. Then just touch up the roots every six weeks. You shouldn't colour all of your hair when just the roots need doing, unless you want to change your colour completely. I only need to use a third of a tube or less each time, so the tubes are cost effective. If you have masses of hair you might need to use more. Buy a box of gloves too. Peroxide, colourant and gloves will all cost about 25 to 30 pounds but they all should last a long time.

I used to use the box dies but they were ruining my hair so a hairdresser recommended I use professional colours and they completely saved my hair.

Spend an hour or so watching professionals on YouTube doing whatever you do to your hair, you will pick up some tips.
Ask for someone to help you the first time, to check no bits are missed etc.

I was told by a hairdresser if you are changing from one hair dye to another make sure that it has a yellow/orange component. Don't go from yellow to ash blonde in other words as your hair will go a bit grey/green.

Yes, I came on to say go to Sally's and get the right equipment.

Always use a special dying brush, never the nozzle from those dye packs.

Have someone there to check the back.

Practice on a day where you don't have anything essential to go to or work the next day. You may make a few mistakes along the way!
