Yay or Nay? I am 5'9. ... Between a 16/18 ... Can I get away with one? I just bought one which (I think) is gorgeous. I don't think I look like a big billowing sailboat but ? Also, what footwear? Sandals with a wedge? Or flat flip flops? Or neither and just wear as 'home rags' ? TIA

I love a maxi dress, I own dozens and they all look great. Many compliments on them so why not? Go for it! I always wear mine with flip flops or flat leather sandals. No heel whatsoever, too mumsy

PrincessGeorge · 27/05/2015 20:58

Ok so no heel. So do you wear anything over? Cropped denim jacket? Cardi?

I'm not a fan.

I think 99% of instances they aren't flattering. Especially if strapless and/or loudly patterned.

The 1% are usually plain jersey t-shirt style maxis on tall slim women.

Always flats btw.

I'm similar height / size and have a few maxis and always get complimented when I wear them. I don't go for the ruffled ones that have acres of material at the bottom, I tend to go for column-ish styles and wear a cardi or denim jacket over.

I like maxi dresses. If it is warm enough I don't wear anything over but if it is cool then I would go for a denim jacket.

I just remembered I wore one with a tightish jumper last summer when it cooled down in the evening and that looked good too.

PunkrockerGirl · 27/05/2015 21:07

I'm not a fan for myself (they're always too long because I'm something of a short-arse). Wink However I think on someone your height they can look lovely for the summer. And yes, definitely flats. Not sure about a jacket/cardi, I'd need to see a picture of the dress.

I'm 5'8 a size 18 and bloody love a maxi dress. Will often wear a wide belt with it high on my waist to give it a little shape and if its not overly warm a bolero style cardi or fitted denim jacket to cover arms. I think it is the most flattering of summer styles as I hate my legs and have extremely chunky calves so short dresses don't suit me and i would never do shorts.

Wear it out. I bet you get loads of compliments.

Maxis look best on taller, statuesque women, I reckon - gives a good Greek goddess effect. I wear mine with a denim jacket if cold, and bronze fitflops for daytime, or wedges for evening. Completely flat flip-flops, like Havaniaenenananenas, tend to make me waddle, which, if I haven't buttoned the jacket in to give me a waist, leads people to enquire about when I'm due.

LastNightADJSavedMyLife · 27/05/2015 22:35

I'm around the same height and size and I love them! I always wear the full top type ones so not strapless or spaghetti straps. And I don't wear any that tie at the back as find I look a bit pregnant Blush

I like Monsoon or John Rocha
