Distressing a leather bag - any tips?

I have a lovely, new dark leather satchel-type bag but it just looks too shiny and new.

Is there anything I can do to age it a bit, without totally wrecking it? Google suggests rubbing alcohol on, using sandpaper and whacking it with a baseball bat or perhaps putting it through a wash.

Does anyone have any experience of this they can share?

Yep, using it will do the trick ... It normally works for my other stuff. This particular bag seems to be bloody indestructible though. Have beaten it with a rolling pin and put it through a wash, and it looks new
