Any "triangular" shapes about? What do you wear?

After seeing photos of myself this week I think that I have been wearing completely the wrong style/colours for my shape.

Although I'm usually a size 10 in clothing, my shoulders are quite broad and my arms a bit pudgy, and with my normal/slim enough legs I look like an inverted triangle! (Kind of like Hayden Panettiere shape but not as toned/muscular).

I always wear dark skinny jeans and light coloured tops and after reading on the subject I now realise that I should be wearing lighter coloured bottoms and darker stops to reverse the "triangle" look.

Also, I've always found straight legged jeans to be more flattering, but usually go with skinny as they are in fashion.

I think I may need to start wearing day dresses/a-line skirts as these would be more flattering. Any suggestions? Fellow inverted triangles want to moan?

Also....my bum could be more "lifted". Has anyone had success with squats to give a bigger bum and balance out their shape?

Hi FabULouse

Ooh I have chinos in a stone colour from last summer, I must dig them out of the wardrobe and hope they still fit me.

I think I have been doing the dark jeans/pale top combo wrong as have been wearing it day to day with flat shoes.

What I would give to be a pear shape!

Any other triangles out there?

I am triangular to hourglass but have the broad shouldered and podgy arm thing going on. I've never particularly thought about dark on top, light on bottom but I do like skater dresses, usually with a wrap top as they balance me out and a v neck makes me look much narrower than a round neck.

I don't ever wear capped sleeves. I either go sleeveless or half/3/4/full sleeves.

I think the fit is really important. The shoulder line on a top really has to go to the edge of your shoulder to avoid highlighting the broadness.

Hi nottheop

Funny that, I always seem to choose skater type dresses as they are flattering, it must be the balancing action.

I never thought about v-necks being more flattering than round, thanks for that tip! Why am I so rubbish at working out what looks good on me?! I only ever realise the reality when I see photos!

I am an inverted triangle and hate it....always trying to dress so as not to feel too top heavy.
I do lighter bottoms, always wear dark on top, v necks, A line skirts, skinny jeans but only with heavy boots( do not touch the skinnies in the summer), nothing fussy on top, bootcut and flares are my most flattering type of Jason

Iloveangel · 14/05/2015 21:08

Inverted triangle here....particularly top heavy......generally a size 10 but with a 32f bust.
I wear the following:
Wrap tops
V neck tops
Long v neck cardigans
Short v neck cardigans
All tops are dark btw
Skinny jeans but only with heavy boots so they get packed away in the summer!
Flares
Boot Cuts
A line skirts
Shorts (that arnt too tight)
Decent Bras
Long necklaces rather than choker style
It has taken me 42 years to realise the above is what suits.
I now do not buy anything that deviates from the list!!!
Boring but stops impulsive non flattering purchases!!

Loving all the tips from fellow inverted triangles Grin. You all have it worked out already, I feel like I am about 15 years too late for this, although it looks like I might have to go on a shopping trip.

I have always loved flares/bootcut/boyfriend style jeans...I wish they were permanently in fashion like skinnies. Who do skinny jeans suit anyway?!

I'm also inverted triangle and find buying jackets, coats, and shirts really difficult. I have really long arms too and I often end up looking like a man in a woman's coat! Very flat chested too,so I find it hard to feel feminine. I end up with a uniform of skinny jeans and vest tops with a cardi over the top, or sleeveless dresses with a cardi. It seems that the waists on dresses is getting higher too, which doesn't help. I love clothes but hate clothes shopping for me.

tossedsalads · 19/05/2015 17:26

SevenEleven- i hate clothes shopping too. It seems that everything is made for people with narrow shoulders and 32 inch ribs!

I have the skinny ribs but not the narrow shoulders! Been trying to find a dress for a christening next weekend. They all seem to have sleeves ATM and so I can't find anything. If it fits on the shoulders it gapes at the bust. In fact, everything seems to gape at the bust recently. Think I may have to go back to stuffing my bra!!

HayFeverHell · 25/05/2015 13:27

I'm have the opposite problem, but noticing other women, I would say that wrap tops/dresses, v-necks, raglan sleeves, and skinny jeans might be worth a try for you.

tossedsalads · 25/05/2015 14:35

Thanks! I have always liked the look of raglan sleeved tops, just need to find some now...
