White Tie Party? What to wear?

I have been invited to a marquee, white tie birthday party in early July. It is in the North of England, so not necessarily warm. I have a lovely short blue Monsoon dress but does White Tie mean a long dress? If so, what? I love buying on Ebay so am more likely to get something 2nd hand but am open to suggestions. Can afford £100 (ish) and would prefer to wear existing shoes (black) as I am rubbish with heels and new shoes. I am 5ft 10, 46 years old and a size 14. I would prefer something fitted and flattering as sticky- outy makes me look like a ship in full sail. Sleeves / half sleeves would be a good idea. I am fair (blonde highlights) and would prefer a deep blue / green / rather than lots of patterns and NO frills etc.

Oh, lovely ladies. Can you help?

Probably not your thing at all OP but I looked for vintage evening dresses on Ebay and found this. I think I am in love.

Thank you so much. I really like the Deep Blue one but can't find a length and it looks a bit too much of a train for an outdoor / marquee do. The only one I wouldn't wear is the vintage one.

Loads to examine. Wow! Thanks again. Flowers

Ooh bargain £210 reduced to £84 size 14s left

The bright green ebay one Lemondrizzle is gorgeous. But the black lace bits look scratchy and so I would probably have to take the scissors to it.

Love the Grey Silk one.

Still preferring sleeves. Just occasionally my eczema flares up and it means that my back (where it seems to roost) is covered. But....Some of these are amazing.

I saw this little jacket on sale. If you got that then it might be possible to go for a fairly plain (sleeveless) column dress without worrying about a flare up showing so much.

Don't forget you can get the length taken up if you need (prob about £15 at the dry cleaners).

How about this black dress?
Under budget, with sleeves and you can wear black shoes?
Or this pale dress?

Beyond my original budget but I love it - and it was in the sale.

I have ordered this dress and am picking it up next weekend from the shop. I will then know they have it in my size but can just leave it there if it looks stupid. I am happy with colour and style (although I might have a few more lumpy bits than the model)

What would you wear underneath? I am assuming, full on Spanx or similar.

Also, shoes. I think black might be a mistake. Am now adding shoes! Any ideas? I am terrible in heels but need a bit of a heel. Nude coloured? Red?

I have absolutely no idea at all how I managed to paste in a picture of a bed (we do own the bed in our very nice flat which we rent ). How extraordinary! Sorry, ladies. Maybe I could use the lovely throw at the bottom of the bed to keep me warm late at night at the party.

Oh that is a stunning dress. Perfect for white tie.

Silver shoes maybe?

shadesofwinter · 23/05/2015 09:37

That's a beautiful dress. Agree, silver shoes might work. The model is wearing black though. Worth trying your black ones if you do get the dress.

Def long, jewels. Long gloves no longer essential. If marquee then yes, fgs comfy shoes. Flirting never quite certain and you may have to traipse out over lawn.
