Gel. Acrylic. Whatever. Real nails a disaster and need to grow up.

Which would you recommend.

When my nails were wrecked, from acrylic nail extensions I used rimmel nail rescue to get them back in good condition-worked a treat for me and still use it if I take off my gel polish for a break.

I personally now prefer a gel polish, it doesn't add and length to my natural nail as it's literally a nail polish but as its cured under a light it's long lasting and rarely chips. It's helped my nails grow quite a lot too and there's no damage when I remove it properly.

Thanks. Might try the Rommel thing

I have had acrylics for a few years and had no damage. But I didm't have tips, they were sculpted.

I now have gel polish over my natural nails as I don't have time to have a set of nails sculpted every few weeks and my job makes it difficult for very long nails. My naturals nails have grown well, the gel reenforces the nail so they don't break. It doesn't chip so my nails look nice for 2-3 weeks at a time.

My other problem with sculpted or tips is that I rarely get from one appointment to the next without breaking at least one and I always think it looks awful when one nail is missing.

RIMMEL!!

Have put a rimmel colour on today to stop me picking them - 'natural tan' look like a corpse

If you have gel, do you have to go back to the salon to get them taken off? My nails have suddenly gone really shit after being lovely for 40 years. They don't grow without breaking Sad

I just apply/remove them myself. As long as I don't pick my nails stay in good condition. To remove I buff the topcoat, put a piece of cotton wool soaked in acetone on the nail, wrap in tin foil and leave for about 15mins then the polish just flakes off them I give my nails s light buff to make sure it's all gone and reapply the gel polish (it's rare that I don't have polish on but if I'm giving my nails a break I just apply the nail rescue stuff after the light buff)

With Acrylic they need to be removed by acetone, preferably by the salon that applied them.
Hard Gel needs to removed by Buffing/ Filing them off, until there is only a very thin layer of Gel (that is then left to grow out or reapply a new set)
Soft Gel, can be removed by Acetone also, such as the Gel Polishes. I would always get them removed correctly, otherwise you will ruin our natural nails. I've worn Acrylic extensions for years, and they haven't ruined my nails underneath. Never pick or pull, as you will take layers off your natural nails. Also use a good Nail Oil and Hand Moisturizer Smile Hope this helps, sorry for going on a little Blush

I get my gel done at a salon, every 2-3 weeks.

I'm new to the nail thing too, I love my nails to be colourful but can never keep nail polish looking nice. I'm on my second set of gell polish now, the first set lasted 4 weeks though if I'd had time I'd have got them done at 3, I went back got it removed and a new colour put on yesterday and I'm really happy with how well they lasted, I wasn't gentle with them, I worked on the car moved furniture and did general housework without chipping or breaking them and my nails feel strong.

staceybrown3dd · 12/05/2015 22:43

Gel polish is great. You don't have to worry about damage to your natural nail and it's long lasting

IHavemyownLighthouseyouknow · 12/05/2015 23:56

Fibreglass (or silk) all the way for me. Much better for my nails than acrylic, they look much so much more natural and take less time to soak off (10-15 mins). And you don't get the problems that you have with the gel/shellac whatever ones. I can go 4 months between sets with a fill every 2-3 weeks.

Btw - I've had these for 10 years, after 10 years of acrylics - and I'd never go back to acrylics, so much stronger so less breakage, and they look a lot better.

BadgersArse · 16/05/2015 17:40

well i have had acrylics put on under the banner of Nexgen nails

They look ok, a bit scary..
