So sick of nail varnish chipping!

I put some Rimmel 'Lasting Finish' on last night and it's already bloody chipped on two fingers!!!

Please tell me you ladies have some holy grail varnish & top coat you can recommend me, I don't care how much it costs if it lasts more than 24hrs!!!

The Rimmel salon pro with lycra in is very good. Imvho though you don't get chip free unless you go for gel polish. I can't wear it at all at the moment because of work so all my lovely gel polishes are gathering dust Sad

DrElizabethPlimpton · 10/05/2015 11:08

I use OPI. Base coat, two coats of colour and the top coat. If I leave each coat to fully dry it lasts well.

IHavemyownLighthouseyouknow · 10/05/2015 11:13

Mavala base coat and MarvaDry as a top coat. Mine goes 2 weeks without chipping.

AwayAndRunUpMaHumf · 10/05/2015 11:23

I've used tons of top coats but the best one I've found is seche vite, about 9 quid from boots.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 10/05/2015 11:28

Two coats of whatever varnish you like, don't leave to dry in between and whack on No 7 topcoat and it'll be dry and rock hard in less than a minute.

Two really thin layers of CND Vinylux and a top coat. I only have to do my nails every two weeks.

berri · 11/05/2015 06:57

Thanks for all the recs, will definitely start making a list, can't believe some of them last 2 weeks!

I love the gel too but find it really wrecks my nails for some reason, so usually just get them done if we're going on holiday or something.

I'm a fan of gel but if it doesn't work for you, I would second Seche Vite which really clings on.

SuffolkNWhat · 11/05/2015 07:03

I do gel nails at home. They last 2-3 weeks.

KneeQuestion · 11/05/2015 07:13

Out the door topcoat by Inm is very goood.

Costs around £5.99 on Ebay.

ImBrian · 11/05/2015 07:32

I use opi and then seche vite, they don't chip but I do get a bit of wear along the edge but they last for a week.

calzone · 11/05/2015 07:34

Shellac

Currently got French manicure which has lasted 3 weeks, no chipping. SmileSmileSmile

Eastpoint · 11/05/2015 07:37

Opi/essie & seche vite last a week for me, usual amounts of washing up etc

olafisking · 11/05/2015 07:39

Don't buy Seche Vite from Boots, it's usually £5.50 on Amazon!

HellKitty · 11/05/2015 07:49

I've just had the same problem with my Rimmel salon pro. Chips after a day. To those who do Gels at home, do you buy the light and the base/top coat? Sorry for hijacking!

FoodieMum3 · 11/05/2015 10:07

I've a Ted baker nail polish that lasts for days. Price was reasonable too. I'll definitely buy more shades.
HTH.

Liveinthepresent · 11/05/2015 16:57

I have this problem- I think it's my nails as they are dry and flaky and break if I don't put polish on them. It's very annoying!
Even when I had shellac done it only lasted a week.
Not very helpful I know but I empathise OP

Amaxapax · 11/05/2015 17:13

The Essie base and top coats have changed my life. It comes in a two pack in Boots and pretty much guarantees my nail varnish will last about a week. I would never go without it now.

u32ng · 11/05/2015 21:17

Ugh! Same problem here! I have weak bendy nails which I think stresses the polish & it cracks off.

Try a nail hardener as your base coat. I had a red rimmel 'double decker bus' polish last 3 days on me which for me is amazing!!

CapnMurica · 11/05/2015 22:04

The No7 topcoat I agree is brilliant. I also like Eye Candy top coat, you can get it in Tesco or Sainsburys.

BEST EVER basecoat is from Essence which you get from WIlkos. About £2.50 and seriously, my nails take a beating but the polish stays on for ages.

It's in a silver bottle, called nail hardener or something. This one.

Cockbollocks · 11/05/2015 22:11

Agree with seche vite recommendation .

And, yes to base coat and two coats of polish. Mine look good for about two weeks. I love shellac but it does ruin my nails if I keep having it done.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 11/05/2015 22:35

Essence varnishes are amazing too, it's a really good range of make up.

Eastpoint · 12/05/2015 03:09

Liveinthepresent Try rubbing some oil into your nail bed, that should help their condition.

MyFriendsCallMeOh · 12/05/2015 03:22

Buff your nails before you start (then wipe dust off with nail polish remover), helps everything stick properly. Then base coat / hardener, two coats of colour and a quick dry top coat (Nails Inc and Seche Vite work best for me). I didn't use to buff my nails but it really helps. There was a mn-er on here ages ago who was a nail tech. She said it was like exfoliating your face - gets rid of all the dead cells on the surface, your nail hardener will work better too.

cuntyMcCunterson · 12/05/2015 06:02

hellkitty I gel polish my nails at home, bought a starter kit from red carpet (used to be available on QVC) now I use different polish and I've got a new light after I dropped my old one. I'm currently wearing sheer nude colour-had it on for 3weeks and think it will do at least another 3/4 days and it still looks fab!
