Nail varnish to last a week. Possible?

I know, I doubt it, but as a very, very useless woman when it comes to all things feminine, I thought it was worth an ask.

I know you can go to nails bars and get Shellac nails, but I really don't want that. Is there any clear, hard as nails varnish I can use over the top of varnish to keep them going for a week? (Holiday)

Sally Hansen does a range of top coats that I have always rated.
Also, don't forget to go right over the tip of your nail so it seals it all the way round the edge - less chipping

I find seche vite useless. It looks great but it just peels off my nails.

coffeeandcalpol · 08/05/2015 12:14

Opi 2in1 base coat and top coat is very good, seche vite causes my varnish to peel off in one complete piece

It's also better to do thin coats of nail varnish, more chip resistant. The longest wearing I ever had was over a week with three thin coats of Miss Sporty varnish. I can't remember if I used a top coat, but if I did it would have been Sally Hansen No Chip. I couldn't believe it, with such a cheap polish!

Look out for CND Vinylux. It's made by the Shellac people, but is cured by natural light rather than a UV lamp, and can be removed normally. Should last a week.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 08/05/2015 13:06

Pale colour and topped with No7 top coat which is dry and rock hard in seconds.

Allie82 · 08/05/2015 21:18

Cnd vinylux always lasts me a week or more. You can get it done in a nail bar or buy on Amazon c

NormHonal · 08/05/2015 21:20

I rate the new Jessica Phenom stuff. Seems to last very well, but you paint it on and take it off like normal polish.

This ... I have to top up the tips

Sally hensen miracle gel ... Just varnish

I tried some of the Seventeen Gel varnish recently.

Cheap as chips and hard as, well, nails.

MaryMotherOfCheeses · 08/05/2015 21:26

What I couldn't do is take the bloody stuff off Grin

Do you need a different remover for gel type varnish?

PuppyMummy · 08/05/2015 22:02

another vote for cnd vinylux polish. it goes on and is removed like normal polish but will last a week.

I have it on my toes as well and it lasts forever!

Nolim · 08/05/2015 22:07

Sechee vite does not work for me, the varnish just peels off.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 08/05/2015 22:11

I've had a revelation recently, which is counter intuitive. My main problem is tip wear not chips, regardless of what top coat and polish I use mine wear within 24 hours, taking them over the edges makes absolutely no difference and is really fiddly as I keep mine very short. What works for me is filing the tips lightly with a crystal file at 45 degrees under the end, gives a lovely sharp edge again and no more prone to chips. I'm getting a week out of polish doing this for the first time ever. Also sometimes do another layer of topcoat after about 3 days to re-gloss. Above all else, use pale polish.

washerwoman2 · 08/05/2015 22:16

A friend recommended this to me a couple of months ago. I have been seriously impressed with how it helps nails dry and stay unchipped and have started regularly painting my nails again. It lasts a week on me.

I use Eddie first base on clean nails, wiped with nail varnish remover immediately prior to starting then polish (I like Rimmel pro but colour range is limited. Essie is nice although don't really rate nails inc). Two thin coats. Then finish with seche vite. do each layer quickly and dont bother for each layer to fully dry. I have 2 yo twins and garden/go to beach/park/sandpit and get a good 5 days out of this approach.
